Lets say your shooting a 14.5" AR15 with a brake on it like a Surefire.

How far away can the flash from it be seen, and how much does it affect your own vision?

On a clear night, probably a mile away.

From the shooters position it should not affect Your eyes too much on semi auto.

"On a dark night, you could even see a candle flame flickering up to 30 mi. (48 km) away."

Muzzle flash, viewed from the business end of the rifle, is visible for a lot farther than you might think...

If its pitch black...a long ways away.  If theirs ambient light (full moon, etc) not as far.

Depends on the elements, the person seeing the flash from a distance...everyone sees differently...i would think with naked eye on an open chunk of land..about 1/2 mile would be average. The flash is so brief it would be hard to see at a mile or so unless the observer was prepared and looking in the direction of the flash. Would also depend on the observers night vision..whether it was fully developed or not. New night eyes see far less versus fully developed visual purple.

As for what you would see either through a scope or iron sights...not much at all, and i have never had it affect my night vision. I have done allot of night shooting both training in the military, practical in the military, and plinking in the Arizona deserts..only time i ever saw anything while shooting was occasionally out of the AK when shooting fast and allot out of my 2 Mosins-Nagants. The AK at the time, only had a thread protector nut on the muzzle and the Mosin's had nothing. Even when i did see any flash it was only a slight of orange which didnt affect any vision. Something else which would affect it as well would be the powder. Rifles typically use slower burning powder and i would guess cheaper ammunition would use very cheap powder which could burn allot slower. Some of the Russian 7.62x54R for the Mosins we used, i would stand to the side and watch as my son would shoot...you could see what looked like small chunks flying out of the muzzle burning versus just the normal flash of burning gas.

It also depends on what ammo you are using. US mil ammo doesn't flash that bad, I believe there is a retardent in the powder.

yep

It depends a lot on the powder and the muzzle device

When I was in high school we took a mini-14 camping, at night, rapid fire was like a blinding strobe light. Giant basketball sized globes of brilliant flash.

It looked like this...

Later, I installed this, and the flash was like a paper match when it burns out, almost nothing.

About 10 years ago,  I got to shoot a full auto M-14 ( 762NATO),  I was impressed with how little flash there was, even on full-auto

The Phantoms and Vortex flash suppressors do a great job on 556 carbines, and the standard USGIA1/A2 do a respectable job.

Muzzle brakes seem to typically be very flashy

short barrels, magnum pistol powders, and some muzzle brakes, came really make a lot of flash

Hollywood also likes to make a lot of flash, usually with flash powder blanks or CGI

That's not really surprising to be honest.  I mean consider this...  on a dark night you can see light from outer space.

But also consider how far your eyes can see normally.
http://mintaka.sdsu.edu/GF/explain/atmos_refr/horizon.html

Without refraction you can see only to the horizon (depending on the height of the object of course) but with refraction you can see beyond the horizon, depending on the atmospheric conditions and the time of day.

LOL

that's because most of the powder burns OUTSIDE of the barrel

Yea I just watched the other video, and barrel length plays a big role with a bare muzzle.
