How many rounds would you put through a new build before betting your life on it?  I'm talking minimum here.

250 consecutive without a stoppage or cleaning. I would say break in the rifle with 100 or so and then do a good cleaning followed by 250 rounds.

250-500ish, I normally put a few thousand threw my M16A4 service rifle before every deployment to iraq Ive been on so far, And i would definitely  bet my life on it.

I would tend to agree, somewhere between 500-1000 rounds prior to actually betting my life on any weapon.
As for ARs, I tend to like mixing break in period between slow fire distance out to 100 yards (I know, but that is all the farther we qualify to) and once zero has been found then some CQB work, knowing where my offset is from sight to bore at what distance.  Then some double taps, dedicated pairs, failure drills, shooting on the move, reload drills, ect.  Basically whatever it takes, shooting from whatever position to make me feel comfortable with the weapon prior to using it for duty.
