how many rounds should a clean AR fire before it starts to choke? I have a RR M4 style that is new to me, and it will only go about 200-250 rounds before I have to use the FA. I have been cleaning with CLP, and I have tried 4 types of ammo, and several different mags. Any thoughts? Thanks, Milton |

About every 200 round mark, slightly pull back on the charging handle until you see the bolt gas rings move in front of the carrier exhaust ports, then add a few drops of CLP (or a quick shot if you are using a spay can) into one of the holes, then relock the bolt closed. This will add CLP to the gas section of the B/C, and the CLP will be migrated through out the action during live fire to re-lube the parts. Using this method, I have taken rigs past the 4000K mark without cleaning. Now the real question come down to what type of shooting you will be doing before cleaning. If your target shooting, then you may find that the bore should be cleaned to keep the rifle from spraying, over just adding New CLP to just keep the rifle running. At what point the Bore needs to be cleaned will be determined by the size of the groups, hence the point that the bore has fouled to the point that you are no longer grouping, but just spraying down range. P.S. Welcome to the site!!!!! |

If you have to use the FA after 200-250 rounds consistently then you may be lubing too much. I've never had to use the FA and I'll usually have at least one 500-700 round firing day per month (usually two). I live in the southern NM desert, so I always lubed very lightly. I've seen ARs gunk up (at least in this dusty/sandy area) when they are lubed heavily. |
