To build an AR, from the ground up, not bottom of the line, not top of the life just a mid range good shooting ar? Would it make more sense to buy one already built from an FFL, for my first?

i have about 1200 sunk into mine.

i wouldn't say that it is full of premium parts, pretty much middle of the road.

LMT upper with "Texas spec" bcg
mil spec CTR, MIAD, MOE, trigger guard.  all by MAGPUL
CMT carry handle
H2 buffer
Troy FH
VTAC mkII
promag side sling swivel
SUN DEVIL lower with CMT parts

if you are shrewd, you can get one together on the cheap.  i got my first AR in trade for a used Beretta 96fs.

i haven't been pricing lately, but i'm pretty sure you can get a new bushmaster in the neighborhood of 900 right now.

Bushies, are pretty good ars, correct? A good platform to build off of anyways?

yeah, they are fine.  i keep hearing about canted front sights, but if you can inspect before you buy, it is a non-issue

Im in the middle of my first and still awaiting all the parts to arrive. I would say 1200-1500 for a good mid range. I am up to 1300 and need sights and other misc upgrades like charging handle, trigger, etc.

Essential Arms lower $110
LPK $60-75
Upper $500-650
Stock   $50 on EE
carry handle (optional) $75

Look on the EE for almost all of this and you can build a good rifle for a good price.

CMMG complete upper- $550

DS Lower Receiver- $100

DS LPK- $60

BCM stock kit- $90

MagPul MBUS- $60

That's a pretty good piece of gear... It isn't 100% mil-spec... But close enough for me. I have since decided to add a MagPul MOE buttstock at $55, although that's definitely optional.

you can buy lots of parts on EE just dont rush and buy all the stuff that's priced because of that fuss we had.

When I bought mine the basic set was priced as follow and I feel it is a decent rifle. and this was built october / november of 08

Complete Mega lower with DPMS parts from Colman Tylor - 196
Complete Mega upper from colman tylor - 90
Lightly used carbine CMMG 14.5 1/7 twist chrome lined M4 profile w/ Phantom FH - 200 on EE
LMT BCG from Bravo - 130
YHM Smooth rifle Freefloat w/ end cap - 160
Nikon ProStaff 3x9x40 scope - 150
MagPro mount - 50

and you can go cheaper like with at A1 or A2 upper and a A2 FSB would of saved me about 150 / 175 that and the only thing used was the barrel

pic is before my promag mount.

Stag lower    $130
Stag LPK         $70
M4 Stock         $50
Stag Upper    $500

Total of $750 for my Stag. And that upper is a flattop but came with a carry handle.

This was built over a year ago prior to the election so I'm sure prices have gone up.

Edit: The place I bought the upper from now says, "Stag Upper orders may take 20 TO 25 weeks to ship."

How long would I be looking at for a build? Also it seems like there is a place that discusses building times, how tos etc, I just can't find it now. Anyone care to point me in the right direction?

You are in the right forum for the "how to" part of buidling an AR-15. There are plenty of tutorials just on this site alone. Hell, I bought a book to help me learn and I ended up just using information from the site as the tutorials here are far more detailed.

As far as the actual build and wait times... well, you need to decide first on exactly what you want. Then, of course, go from there. For my first build I just knew I wanted to keep the cost down while not skimping. And knew I wanted an M4 clone.

As far as wait time for particular parts, every vendor here has their own subforum and could easily tell you about wait times or availability of a part from that particular vendor. First thing I would do if I were you is secure yourself a lower. Then get myself a lower parts kit and a stock. Once that stuff is installed, moved on to an upper. Either already put together or build one yourself.

I've heard that you can buy lowers pre assembled, as in they can be bought through ffl and then just put in a gun? Would it make sense to buy one such as that or just do the building myself on everything possible to truly love my gun?

You can buy the lower assembled or stripped, that is up to you. I bought mine stripped as it saved me about $50 in the long run and I wanted the experience of installing the lower parts. That being said, I've seen lowers assembled at many places that didn't charge any extra for the parts being installed. Unless you had your heart set on a particular lower that you found online, I'd go to a local FFL if I were you and see what they have (or can order) and then decide from there.

Edit: You may also want to consider that some people are anal about the fit and finish of the upper to the lower. And if you know what upper you want then they may well help you decide on your lower.
