| To build an AR, from the ground up, not bottom of the line, not top of the life just a mid range good shooting ar? Would it make more sense to buy one already built from an FFL, for my first? |

i have about 1200 sunk into mine.
i wouldn't say that it is full of premium parts, pretty much middle of the road. LMT upper with "Texas spec" bcg mil spec CTR, MIAD, MOE, trigger guard. all by MAGPUL CMT carry handle H2 buffer Troy FH VTAC mkII promag side sling swivel SUN DEVIL lower with CMT parts if you are shrewd, you can get one together on the cheap. i got my first AR in trade for a used Beretta 96fs. i haven't been pricing lately, but i'm pretty sure you can get a new bushmaster in the neighborhood of 900 right now. |

I just finished mine for about $1100.

CMMG complete upper- $550 DS Lower Receiver- $100 DS LPK- $60 BCM stock kit- $90 MagPul MBUS- $60 That's a pretty good piece of gear... It isn't 100% mil-spec... But close enough for me. I have since decided to add a MagPul MOE buttstock at $55, although that's definitely optional. |

How long would I be looking at for a build? Also it seems like there is a place that discusses building times, how tos etc, I just can't find it now. Anyone care to point me in the right direction? You are in the right forum for the "how to" part of buidling an AR-15. There are plenty of tutorials just on this site alone. Hell, I bought a book to help me learn and I ended up just using information from the site as the tutorials here are far more detailed. As far as the actual build and wait times... well, you need to decide first on exactly what you want. Then, of course, go from there. For my first build I just knew I wanted to keep the cost down while not skimping. And knew I wanted an M4 clone. As far as wait time for particular parts, every vendor here has their own subforum and could easily tell you about wait times or availability of a part from that particular vendor. First thing I would do if I were you is secure yourself a lower. Then get myself a lower parts kit and a stock. Once that stuff is installed, moved on to an upper. Either already put together or build one yourself. |

I've heard that you can buy lowers pre assembled, as in they can be bought through ffl and then just put in a gun? Would it make sense to buy one such as that or just do the building myself on everything possible to truly love my gun? You can buy the lower assembled or stripped, that is up to you. I bought mine stripped as it saved me about $50 in the long run and I wanted the experience of installing the lower parts. That being said, I've seen lowers assembled at many places that didn't charge any extra for the parts being installed. Unless you had your heart set on a particular lower that you found online, I'd go to a local FFL if I were you and see what they have (or can order) and then decide from there. Edit: You may also want to consider that some people are anal about the fit and finish of the upper to the lower. And if you know what upper you want then they may well help you decide on your lower. |
