At least 1996 IIRC. I think I had an e-mail conversation with Ed back then about one of his reviews - I probably still have the e-mail on my old PC's hard drive. BTW back in 2000 they went to this new BBS system - so all of us that had been here a while had to re-register and start our post counts again. I don't think Ed or Goatboy has ever brought back all those old posting into the Archive - a shame as lots of good info was lost. |

I could have the dates slightly wrong, but... Ed Avila Jr. started the original mailing lists around '96, and quickly added a simple web page which provided instructions on how to join. Sometime in '97, he put up a UBBS web discussion board on that server, but it got little traffic, as most of the hardcore users were still using the mailing list exclusively. Sometime in mid-98, the mailing list started having problems and was down for a couple of days. A lot of the mailing list users, staved for their AR15 fix, showed up at the mostly empty UBBS web forums and began posting until the email list was fixed. This infusion of new users and the new posts that came with them jump-started the web forums, and while many ended up going back to the email list for a time, most migrated permanently to the web board over the next year. Meanwhile, Goatboy (Juan, Ed's brother) had been working on a new custom web board for 50 World, the Avila's 50-BMG site. He decided to put AR15.com on it too, and opened the new software up briefly for a Beta test in November 2000 (which is why a few of us have that start date). In early 2001, the hard drives that the old UUBS board ran on crashed, and the new (current) custom software was put into production, and has been running ever since. -Troy |
