I searched the web and forum and could not find a way to visually id magazines for the DPMS 308. Have someone local selling one but do not know visually what to look for to ensure it is for the DPMS and not Armalite?
I appreciate the help. |

The older Armalite mags were based on the M14 mag, modified. I do not know what the new ones look like. The DPMS mags are open on both ends of the feed lips. CProducts feed lips are closed at the back.
One thing on the DPMS mags that is dumber than owl crap is the floor plate. They are very difficult to get off and I have broken the ears off more than one mag trying to pry up the floor plate far enough to clear the locking tabs to slide off the floor plate. Surely Amralite would not have been so stupid as to do something similar. On the back edge of the DPMS floor plate there are two punches that push a piece of metal in, locking the floor plate to the bottom of the magazine. In order to remove the floor plate you have to wedge something under the floor plate and pry it up far enough for those tabs to clear the edge of the mag, then it can be slipped off. To do this you need three hands. The idiot who designed them should be taken out and beaten with a pillow case full of DPMS LR-308 mags. On the sides of the mag you have 4 tabs that hold the floor plate on. Two short ones at the very front of the bottom edge of the magazine and two long ones in the middle along the bottom edge of the magazine. The DPMS floor plate will have a single round drain hole in the bottom of the floor plate in the front 1/5 of the floor plate, slam in the middle. If looking at the front edge of the magazine, the weld will be along the right side where the mag folds over. Therefore, the metal along the front of the magazine will be double thickness. The DPMS follower looks like half an oxygen tank alone the left side of the follower. A large half-round raised area and at the front a small half-round tit sticks out. There are no markings on them anywhere but I have never seen a mag that looks exactly like the DPMS magazine, but as I said, I have not seen a newer model Armalite AR-10 mag. |

Thanks for the info. Just dont want someone to tell me its for a DPMS only to find out its not and I am out the cash. If I take my lower will an Armalite mag fit into a DPMS lower? Just looking for some clear visual clues so I do not get taken.
Thanks for the help. |
| I have two DPMS 308 mags that came with my LR 308. On the bottom of the mags there is a raised area that has the panther logo and it says DPMS Panther Arms. I bought my LR 308 in Aug. 2012 so I don't know what the older mags say but I'm guessing there would be some type of mark on the bottom. I had to wet the raised area to get the image to show up so I could read it. When it's dry you can't really see it, just fades away. Hope this helps! |
| Maybe now but that has not always been the case. I have two dozen DPMS mags and NONE, not one of them, have any kind of marks on the floor plate or anywhere else. About a third of them I got direct from DPMS and the rest came from Midway or 44Mag. No marks does NOT mean they are not DPMS, it may be they are not but it could also mean they are older mags. All of my mags are at least 4 years old. |
| Well i got them, no markings on the plate that i can see. They both have the follower that looks like half a gas cylinder, like my dpms one. I do have one that has a very square shaped follower. Can not read what it says on the base plate. Any idea what brand that one is? |

I had to do this on my two DPMS mags to make the logo standout so I could see it. Otherwise it just blends in with the finish and is very hard to see. |

A DPMS .308 magazine should look very much like a larger version of a conventional AR magazine, while a magazine for the older Armalite receivers will look more like an M14 magazine; DPMS will have a mag catch slot on the left and have a relatively flat top profile, while older Armalite mags have a different looking catch slot and have a more sloped appearance at the top.
Magpul's 20LR .308 magazine fits the LR-308 (and others), and has a profile that looks a lot like the DPMS magazine, while it looks very different from the old Armalite magazines. Hope that helps. |

The one with the square shaped follower is more than likely C Products. For .338 Federal and likely any other .308 based case they are good to go. They did not work worth a darn in my .500 Phantom, .470 Rhino, or .358 HDH without extensive modifications which were much harder to do n the CP than on the DPMS. Magpuls cannot be made to work for anything other than .308 based cases. They swell up and will not insert. On the likely CP mag, the feed lips should be solid at the back of the mag body and for my purposes they could not be easily modified so CP mags are no good for me on anything but the .338 Federal. I'm sure you will find them just fine for your .308.
Magpuls are easy to I.D. They are polymer. CP and DPMS are not. |
