Well I picked up an upper block to install a barrel on my upper and now I find that the HiRise upper I got has the rail to high to go into the block and since it is the heavy competition model without the shell deflector or dust cover the walls of the upper are thick than an standard upper making it wider so even if I modified the blocks for the taller rail on top it would not close around the wider body.

Is is safe to use some leather on the hirise rail and clamp on that to install the barrel?

Thanks..

Panther Receiver Claw will work or Barrel Vise Jaws.

This may also work.

Neither one of those are ideal for the purpose but your only other option is a modified reciever block.

Block modification if NOT an option as the the entire body of the uppe is larger in diameter than a regular A2 upper.  I would have to totally remake the blocks.

My thought was to clamp on the riser which is part of the upper after insulating it with some leather.  Anyone see a problem with this?  Seems it would be stronger than using the vice block that slides up inside the upper as it would spread the stress out more.

Thanks..

Hey Don,

The old school Armorer’s would just clamp the barrel in the vice so they would not stress the upper.

Be careful not to crack the upper if you only clamp on the high-rise rail.

If you need to borrow any of the above mentioned blocks let me know.

There are receiver blocks that clamp around the bottom but I'm not sure who made them or if they're still available.  I thought it was DPMS and that they were making them specifically because of their non-standard upper designs but they aren't listed on their site.

On the Vltor uppers which also don't fit into receiver blocks most people turn it sideways and clamp against the flat of the top rail and the flat at the bottom, using wood or polymer blocks to protect the upper, of course.

Or as already stated, you can do it the way it says in the military armorers manuals which is to use barrel blocks and clamp the barrel into the vise.
