Ok, this is a newb question, but I hope somebody can help me.  I have an upper with an SLR intrepid rail and the gas block fits right into the 'groove' in front of the rail, so there is no way to remove the gas block and then remove the rail(by rotating it off).  Does anybody know how to remove the gas block if it's inside the handguard so then I can remove the handguard?! I've already undone the two hex screws, but it won't 'pull off' as I suspected it would at first...

I have no experience with that specific handguard (I'm assuming it's the same as any other FF handguard), but you don't have to remove the gas block to remove the handguard.  Loosen and remove the two mounting screws for the handguard (the ones at the 6 o'clock nearest the receiver) and then pull the handguard off.  You'll then be able to get at the gas block to remove it.

Those "two" screws need to be completely removed for the hand guard to slide forward. I assume you are doing this ?

I don't think he has touched the handguard mounting screws yet.  Sounds like he loosened the gas block set screws in an attempt to remove the gas block (he thinks the gas block has to be removed before the rail can come off).

I did take off the two mounting screws that are under the handguards, I haven't touched the gas block...I tried to pull the handguard off after completely unscrewing the two screws but it's not budging...should I use a rubber mallet or something?! (You guys can tell I'm not very mechanically inclined )

A gentle tap or a very slight pinch bar to open up the rail, also a twisting motion.  It has a tight barrel nut to rail fit. It should and will slide off, go gently.

This.  Wrap the tip of a large flathead screwdriver with electrical or duct tape to keep from marring your rail, and then use it to slightly spread the gap where the setscrews were removed.
If that doesn't help it move, take a piece of scrap wood and a hammer or mallet and tap on the rear of the rail to move it forward.

SLR has videos on how to install their rails. Look under FAQ at their website.
