I just got a Leupold 3.5-10x40 Tactical scope.  I know the target knobs allow marking of zero, and allow for adjusting the scope to different ranges, etc. but I don't know the specifics.  Where can I go for techniques on using a scope like this? Thanks !

Start with the instructions and get familiar with the knobs and how they are adjusted.  I have a 4.5-14x50mm loopy on my rem700 LTR...  I sighted it in for the desired range, I was around 125yrds, then used the allen wrench that was included to loosen the outer caps of the turrets.  You reset the outer caps to your new zero's.  Do them one at a time so you dont get confused.

OK, so here's the deal, I guess I'm 80% sure of how to use this based on what I've read.  I know how to sight in a scope, then I know you can adjust the caps on the turrets to your zero... Then if you are shooting at longer ranges you can quickly dial in the settings.  I guess my question is, say you need to spin the knob 3 or 4 times for a really long range.  When you return to your original zero do you just need to remember how many times you turned it, or is there a way to tell on the scope?  I assume a log book is kept that indicates how to dial in for different ranges and cartidge loads?

As each "complete" revolution/turn of the elevation turret, cranks in an additional 15 minutes of elevation, 2 turns and 4-6 extra minutes on most rifles will get ya close or to the 1000 yard line, (depending on the rifle and caliber).

As you mak one complete turn UP, you will see lines below the turret to use as a reference as to whether you are back to zero.

Best to have a come-up chart for your Precision Rifle something like this which will help you when the time comes to dial in your range, (see below).

Come-ups for 24" Colt Accurized Rifle (6724) w/ Leupold Vari-X III, 4.5x14 w/ turrets and Mil-Dots
100- zero
200-1 1/2 min
300-3 3/4 min
350-4 min
400-5 1/2 min
450-7 1/2 min
500-9 1/4 min
550-11 1/2 min
600-12 3/4 min
700-17 3/4 min
800-23 min
900- no target
1000-35 1/2 min (34-36 depending on humidity)

or for the bench rifle, like a Remington 700 using 175 grn. SMKS and Leupold Vari-X III 6.5x20x40 w/ turrets and mil-dots:

100- zero
200-1 1/2 min
300-3 min
400-5 1/2 min
550-10 1/2 min
625-13 min
700-17 min
800-21 min
900-not established yet
1000-not established yet

Also helps to think in terms of "Minutes" instead of clicks, like so:

1 MOA @ 100 yards = 1"
1 MOA @ 200 yards = 2"
1 MOA @ 400 yards = 4"
1 MOA @ 800 yards = 8"
1 MOA @ 1000 yards = 10"

Hope this helps,
Mike
