I have just recently started collecting rifles. I have a Remington 870, Arisaka 99, Savage 22, 30-06, and an SKS. I recently came into a pile of money and was wanting an AR-15. I am still a little strapped for cash so I was looking into building my own. I am very mechanically inclined and love guns, I already load my ammo. but I need to know the basics.

Where do I get started?

How do I get started?

Legal issues (I live in Alabama)?

How long will it take before I have the finished product?

$$$?

Where is a good on-line tutorial on this?

Any other helpful hints or corrections.......
Yes. I know I don’t know what I am doing but that is why I am here.

READ around, esp the tacked threads above on "how to" to get started...

check your state laws for AL that pertain to rifles, etc--NRA's website has it posted

how long? depends on how much money you have, how well you planned, what you want to do, how fast and well you can follow instructions, and how much patience you have....

$$$s will matter on what kinda AR setup, brand of parts, etc you want to use...

the best tutorials are here on AR15.com--YOU will just have to read around and use your "search" feature and/or ask more specific questions pertaining to ARs, IF you cant find the answer already given in another post (for example: difference btw a CL and CM bbl)

This   is another great AR website for info...

How long?  well, if you build a lower and buy a complete upper, and ordered today....probably like next Tuesday you could have a complete AR15.

assuming alabama doesn't have waiting periods for the lower receiver, which is the only 'gun' part teh ATF cares about.

Denny at www.globaltactical.com can probably get you one as soon as you get him the FFL number to ship to.

The simplest way to build your own AR-15 is to purchase a kit. They send you the assembled upper and a lower parts kit. You'll have to get a stripped lower locally from a firearms dealer. That is the legal part of the gun and a decent one (Stag/DPMS/Oly etc.) costs about $120. The assembly process took me about 6 hours, since I had almost no experience with working on guns it will probably won't take you nearly that long. At a minimum you'll need a set of pin punches, a light hammer (preferably brass), a rag, and a block of wood. There are a lot of specialized tools which can make the job easier-namely the pivot pin instillation tool. Places where you can buy kits:

Del-ton
^where I ordered mine
Model 1 Sales
J&T Distributing

Good luck. Another thing- go to an army surplus shop and get the marine core manual on the AR-15. It has a lot of info on the assembly process.

i also don't understand coming into a "pile of cash" and being "strapped" at the same time.

but anyway, i ordered 2 stripped lower receivers on July 31. i received the last parts to finish 1 rifle today. i wanted to put together 2 carbines for $600 each using model 1 kits. then i read too much arfcom! i shopped a little to get what i thought were the best deals on first rate stuff. i'm way over budget on one and slightly over on the other.

lowers weren't big name brand but high quality (a lower is a lower, is a lower). same brand uppers were from one of the top brands in the biz but different dealers (1 isn't here yet, ordered last week). lpk's top brand, custom stock (ctr) on mil spec tube, name brand buis, china aimpoint.

package deals like m&a or model 1 are the cheapest but once you figure out the perceived benefits of certain parts you end up spending more. the upper receiver & barrel assembly are the most critical parts so don't skimp on quality there.

if i had been able to order everything at once, the rifles would have been done in a week. saving $ means waiting for the right deals to pop up.

carbine #1 cost the same as a bushy or rra at the dealer but has $400 in "extras".

carbine #2 is the same as #1 but has a ss match barrel and no extras, at a cost of $650.

you can buy a piece of shit cheaper, maybe get lucky on a good used ar.

research, shop smart, buy quality and you'll have no regrets. just be prepared to stay broke as all sorts of great deals will start popping up.

i'm about to order 2 more lowers. the democrats are coming.

Realistically...any way you cut it you're looking at at least $700. Unless you want crap, or you know a gunsmith or someone who can give you a discount.
