I wanting to get a good quality scope for hunting hogs in low light and with a red spot light at night.  The max distance would be a little over 100 yards, would the Bushnell Elite 4200 1.25-4x24, Illuminated Dot work good and is there any other scope along this line that I should look at, as well?  Thanks, for your time.

not $1000-$2000 scope so most folks here cant help you  as it is not a cool scope to them, but yes it will work for the working man on a budget

I simply use a regular spot and my trijicon reflex. I have occasionally used my SPR with my Leopold 4-12 but it is much harder / slower to get a good shot.

That Bushnell that you mentioned is an excellent scope.  Good glass.  I just didn't like it because it was relatively big and heavy.  I don't hunt a whole bunch, but do go once in a while and I've found that at night having good bright glass that brings in light is more important that a lit reticle.  What good is a lit reticle if you can't see anything through the scope?  I only mention that because some guys will sacrifice glass quality to be able to get the reticle in a given price range.

With that being said, if you don't mind the weight, the Bushnell is a really nice scope.  If you can find one of the Weaver Extreme scopes, those were nice too.  If you want to stay in the price range of the Bushnell, nothing better comes to mind for me.  If anyone mentions the DMS-1, the Bushnell will runs circles around the DMS-1 in terms of low light performance.

If you are trying to keep from spending the amount that the Bushnell will cost, and are willing to forego the lit reticle, I'd look at the Weaver Grand Slam, Nikon African, Leupold Mark AR, Sightron Big Sky and for a really budget nice scope, the Weaver V3, 1-3X.  I couldn't believe how much light the little Weaver brings in.  All in all, if you can spend the money, you'd have a hard time doing better than the Bushnell Elite.

In general, larger objective lenses perform much better for hunting applications in my experience.

All else being equal, the associated larger Exit Pupil does two things:
1) Enhances reduced light performance.
2) Provides more forgiving cheekweld for quick target acquisition in sub-optimal shooting positions.

MoneyMaker may acuse me of being "one of those optics snobs", but I run an ACOG TA11J on my hog rig during the day.
