| I'm sure this had been discussed before but I couldn't find it anywhere. I've been toying around with the idea of building a hydramatic clone, not 100% correct, mostly just outward appearance. I love that worn gold anodizing on them, has anyone been able to achieve that look? |

The black/grey or whatever color is the dyed part of the process ( last before sealing ). I guess you could anodize and lightly dye and then remove most of the dyed finish. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will come along and help out. |

Hello youngblood1989. I've been sick, working odd hours, and distracting myself from the world on weekends or I would have replied sooner. Here are some cool threads, I found them by searching for the members MrM1A1, Veltro, and somebob. I've forgotten some of the threads, there are some very nice looking parts out there.
Here is Veltro's, his doesn't have the strong gold / bronze tint, when you see it in person it is very cool. This color under the black die is less common: https://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=3&f=123&t=573117 This is MrM1A1's, his has the gold tint: http://3gn.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=3&f=123&t=580998 I did this one, mine has the gold / bronze tint: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_123/516003__ARCHIVED_THREAD____H_and_R_barrel___FSB_question__cool_upper_receiver_too____NDS_lower___complete_rifle__.html&page=1 Actually, I did a 2nd one and I found parts for my friend to put one together too: http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=3&f=123&t=651989 The pre-ban lowers didn't work out that well, I guess they are not hardened the same way as the original (GM?) parts, Nodak Spud, or 80% receivers are. If you do this I would stick with a NDS or 80% receiver. Email Victor at usanodizing.com, he will let you know if he is still willing to do this custom work. All the uppers and other original parts I have seen have black dye but that doesn't mean that gray ones didn't wear away like this either. Also, most of these parts are very smooth and look like they were never bead blasted before they were anodized, that is something you will probably want to do. NDS sold me an "in the white" lower receiver that was not blasted and the texture is a very good match. Boywonder777 has a very cool looking Colt XM16E1 upper receiver that has the same type of finish wear, I hope he is putting a lower together to match it. :) Do you have some gold tint parts to start with? I always appreciate seeing pictures. Quoted:

Gold color? My issue M16A1 in 1975 at Ft. Jackson was a Hydramatic (thought it was weird that General Motors made rifles).
It has a greenish tint to it. Odd greenish tint. Not the light to dark gray of the other guns carried by guys in my platoon. It also still had the 3 prong flash suppressor. One of the Drill Sgts. looked it over and then explained how guys the 3 prong unit would catch on vines and such in the jungle and guys would screw them up trying to snap/cut the metal straps on cases of c-rations and ammo. |
