Fully finished - no forge seams except a tiny rib left inside back of the carry handle, and a very slight indentation can be felt at the front outside forward of the carry handle.  No forge letters at all.

Two hard-to-see stamps by the front of the port door.  what looks like a square with maybe a c in it, and below it an inverted triangle with what in it I'm not sure.

iirc, I bought this as a spares upper from sarco in 2002 or thereabouts, around the same time as I bought a set of 3 spares contract barrels, one of which is mounted on this upper ("C MP CHROME BORE")

There's no sight arrow. Almost looks like a 601 upper?

Does it have a little hole for the ejection port cover spring?

Looks like a 601 because I don't see any sight markings.  Is there any flashing inside the carry handle?  And, is the lip above the charging handle squared off around the corners or is is rounded off?

This^^^^^

Looks like a 601 to me, possibly with arsenal refinish. Good value there, repacked and refinished 601 uppers have been selling for around $200 lately.

Looks like a modern port door, and the sight wheel is a later A1 wheel. That's a nice one.

ETA: BTW, WTH kind of lower is that?

Yes, I was more interested in the lower than the upper myself.

The upper looks like a 601.
Got any pics from above?

Just a very little flash inside the carry handle, at the bottom back - otherwise finished smooth even in the carry handle.

squared-off lip above the charging handle

No hole for the port door cover spring

The upper was stripped when I got it, so the sight wheel, charging handle and port door assemblies are more modern spares I had laying around.

The lower is an early (gen 1) Cav-15 - nothing super special.  I was using the lower with a Watson's .50 upper, so it has the extended takedown pin to make breaking it open to reload easier.

Nice 601 thanks for sharing pics.  Definately the start of a nice pricey retro build.

Nice 601 and gotta ask, do you remember what you paid for it back then?

Don't listen to any of these guys.  They haven't a clue of what you have.  I can assure you it is a complete waste of aluminum, and I think it's from the period where they used compressed tin foil to make uppers.  It could vaporize at any moment basically, and I just happen to know of a safe place to properly dispose of this hazardous material you have.  You see, they experimented around with some different manufacturing techniques back then, and even used insane amounts of radiation to fuse tin foil together, rather than forging it.  Yours is one of those...

I know, I know, you can thank me later, but remember me when you look into your family's eyes, knowing that one bold man noticed something...off, and looked out for a brother.  I'll PM you my address, with images of the specific hazmat stickers you can download, print, and attach to the box, after you line it with the containment layers, just in case of a meltdown...or in rare instances, something worse.  Stay calm, follow my directions, and I'll give you a hazmat handling fee discount if you were ever military, but time is of the essence first.  Whatever you do, don't take pictures of it with flash!  As a matter of safety, don't take pictures of it at all anymore, and don't look at it with anything less than a welder's mask!  If it's in a safe next to other steel and aluminum objects, those will need to be decontaminated and disposed of as well.

Fortunately for you, you came across someone who is certified & qualified to deal with these things.  Consider yourself lucky...for now.

You didn't think that the sight arrow is missing for no apparent reason, did you?  The tinfoilrad models couldn't hold that much detail, so they left it off.

I realized I've got most of the parts to do a faithful 601, so I went and ordered an NDS-601 lower and correct pivot pin.

Got a mail out to source the port door, sight wheel, bolt catch and mag button, and I'll divot the mag catch, takedown pin and selector on my mill.

I've already got a solid body stock, correct handguards, repro duckbill, and hg's with slip ring.  I think I've got a slickside carrier somewhere around, too.

NDS just ran out of the triangle charging handles, though - so I'll have to make one or find one, or wait for NDS to do another batch.

Receiver extension and buffer won't be correct, but that won't show.

It's there, probably just was plugged up when it was refinished.

If it were mine I would poke around a little bit with a small unfolded paperclip in the general area of here:

Right you are!  Here's a closeup with my inspection cam of the underside/inside the upper:

And some closeups of the "C" and triangle stamps from the same camera:
