There is no good reason,  you can thank people like clinton for such laws.

You can still buy them from some sites just dont get caught with em!

It's in the Code of Federal Regulations thanks to the FDA, of all government agencies.  It's says basically that if you make an IR laser, it has to have an indicator light saying that it's functioning.  It seems as though there is some unofficial pressure to keep the manufacturers from making lasers with indicator lights.

Contrary to what the previous poster wrote in his very first post here, there is nothing in the CFR to prevent civilian ownership of IR lasers.

Yes, nothing in the CFR but try explaining to a TWRA officer here in Tennesee why you have a rife with a IR device and NVG's in your vehicle.  hence " dont get caught with em!"
I dont know how the laws are in the other states.
