So i now have a Bravo Company upper coming in the mail and i want to install a midwest free float rail on it.  I dont plan on doing this job very often so its hard to justify buying a vise, block and torque wrench.  Is there a way do doing this job reliably for less.  any suggestions appreciated.

Get a rail that only requires removing the delta ring...MI makes one, Troy also.  Daniel Defense Omega requires no mods.

I recommend getting the tools required to disassemble the upper properly.......

Unless you have a buddy who has the tools your out of luck.....

You could always take it to a gunsmith if your really not wanting to touch it.

Or how about a rail like the DD Omega? ... you don't have to remove anything from the rifle except the stock hand guards.

LOL ... I didn't see that at the end of your response.

Thanks for the advise.  I think im just going to bite the bullet and save up for the tools.

Do you think a workbench like this will work as a suitable vise?

buy the tools, they are a cheap investment. you dont NEED the torque wrench, but it is good to have one. they are pricey. its an easy job to install a FF rail though. i used to build AK's and thought they were easy, but time consuming... a blind monkey could assemble an AR.

plus if you take it to a smith, they are gonna charge you out the ass, and you could have just bought the tools.

Midway has a cheap upper receiver block for $30.

Get a Troy TRX Extreme rail (pretty affordable) and it comes with a barrel nut wrench ($30 savings?)

Torque wrench w/ ft/lb settings can be bought at a store like Harbor Freight for $20, and it's useful for other things too (like car tires...)

Ive decided to buy the tools, i may not use them often but its probably nice to have.  I figure a gunsmith would charge me what the tools cost for 20 mins of work.

This vise block looks like a good deal.  Would this folding workbench work as the vise?  I figure it would but want to make sure.  It would fit in my house better then a big table bolt vise.

Get the Blox Works block set from Spikes. It is the best one. I will buy one to replace my other when I start building again.

I'd use something larger than that folding table.  They're not that heavy and you start putting torque on a barrel nut it might want to tip.  Something solid to mount a bench vise to would be adviseable, as in nearly permanently installed.

I put off buying the tools as well, but then I decided to get them for the same reason you did.  Best decision I ever made.  seriously it is.  I have now built two uppers from the ground up and worked on and changed out 3 other uppers.  It's a lot of fun.

You will need a heavier bench than a folding one.  Check your local goodwill or salvation army stores for a used bench or butchers block.  There are plenty of simple bolt together bench plans online, and I'd say go that route.  Until then, I believe an Arfcommer used a thick section of 2'x2' wood and bolted the vice up to that.  Then stood on it to anchor it when using the torque wrench for the barrel nut.

Thanks for the info.  I just figured your only torquing the barrel to 30-40 ft/lb so it wouldn't need a hefty vise....

I have a small bench vice ($25 from HomeDepot) that I have C clamped to my bench and it works fine.

Do you mount it side ways in the vise using a wood board to keep from scratching the rail when using a Block Worx Upper Vise Block for removing the barrel??
