Well I took off the handguards to a upper I just bought and they do not have heatshields.  They are old 6 holed versions.  Any idea who made handguards without heatshields?

Are you sure only Oly Arms made those?  This is an older A2 upper at least since it is Gray not Black.

I believe the "plinker" series guns come with these (no liners).

nothing was on it.  No name or twist.  I used the rod last night to make sure it was 1:9 twist.

Maybe they were switched out at some point.  What does your FSB look like?  Oly's are cast and very smooth and flat.  If you put it side by side with another barrel you will be able to tell the difference right away.

How do you use a rod to determine twist rate?  Can you elaborate?

Put a line along the length on a cleaning rod, and put on a nice, tight-fitting patch.  Push the patch through the bore (allowing the rod to rotate, of course) and stop when it has made one full rotation.  Measure how far the rod is sticking in the barrel.  If you had to push it in 9 inches to get one rotation of the rod, then your twist rate is 1:9.
