Is it nuts to build an a1 16" lightweight  with an a1 stock/grip? (the regular one without the trap door)

If anyone has a pic they can share that would be great. I've not seen one but I think it will look bad ass.

This is my '82 CAR, with M16 non-storage buttstock.  I prefer not having my beard hair janked out while shooting.  Every AR I own uses this stock, and I have several spares rather than ever be without one!

YES! That's it.
The only thing I want is the tear drop f.a. and I have a full fence lower, I'm to poor for a cool lower. Thanks for the pic.

Anyone else want to share?

I will post up when I finish mine.

I like them because they balance well.  Check them out at Retro Black Rifle

I like the look. I just might have to put that spare A1 stock on one of my CAR clones.

F'N COOL I'm going to the gun show tonight!

Standard rifle buffer assembly parts.

But if you get an M16 stock, make sure you have the short stock screw.

Thanks for the info guys. I hit the gun show last night and picked up a new old stock Colt a1 upper with tear drop fa $125.00 Colt bolt/carrier and charger $130. car hand guards $10.00 A1 delta ring, spring and snap ring $10.00

I have a rock river lower A1 grip and stock so now I need a Barrel. I'm leaning on the CMMG 14.5 1/7 with perm A1 . Any thoughts on this selection or CMMG.

14.5 w/ perm A1 WILL NOT get your length to 16".  CMMG also offers a 14.7" barrel with perm. flash hider, that will give you a legal barrel length.

Sounds like a kick ass configuration.  You'll like it

Thanks for the heads up on the 14.5 vs 14.7

Paste from cmmg:
CMMG 14.7 Lightweight CAR Barrel w/A2

"New production 14.7” lightweight CAR barrels w/permanent hider. Permanent hider brings OAL to legal 16”. Features include parkerizing under .625" diameter “F” marked forged front sight base, chrome lined chamber and bore, MP testing, 5.56mm chambering, 1/7” twist, M4 barrel extension, mil-spec parkerizing, drilled gas port, lightweight profile, and standard 1/2x28 threads. Included with barrel is A2 sight assembly, handguard cap and barrel nut. Barrels are engraved “CMMG MPC 5.56 NATO 1/7”.

I know I can get the A1 hider, cool. What is the m4 extension? what is the "f" marked front site vs standard fron site?

Thanks

The M4 carbine has feedramps that extend through the barrel extension into the upper receiver.  It is best to have an upper that has the matching ramps, but most guns seem to run fine if the upper is missing them.

The F front sight has the upper plane that the sight post screws into milled slightly higher than a standard one, so it lines up with detachable carry handle sights, which sit slightly higher than standard sights.  Using it with a CAR upper you will have to turn the post in farther than normal to zero it.  I would talk to CMMG about getting a standard FSB.

+1.

I think they have an option for F or standard FSB on their site.  With a fixed handle upper you should opt for a standard FSB.  Also, Don't forget to add a gas tube and sling swivel if you don't already have that stuff.

There should be no problem running a barrel w/ M4 ramps in a reciever without them.  Doing things the other way around would cause trouble though.

The only thing I would do differently is I'd make it a midlength, since you have to buy a barrel anyway. Not quite retro? Check out the pic thread of the Reed Knight collection - there's an experimental A1 midlength in one of those pics. (recent M16 pic thread) I think it would be about the perfect AR.

I think my mind is set on the 651/652 clone, However it is not done yet. So tell me why you would do a mid and not a car. What are the pros of a mid vs car

Hmmmmm.........I knew a slick-ship crew chief in Veet Nom who had cobbled together a CAR-15 upper to an M-16 lower.  That thing was just about perfect.  Short enough to be handy in a Huey but considered to be more reliable than the little buffer of the CAR-15 lower......

Yes, I know......They weren't really CAR-15's and any XM177 reliability problems were more likely result of the short E1 barrel than buffers.  But that's what we called them and that's what grunt superstition said about the CAR-15 lower assemblies.

My advice is....build it.  I think you'll like it.  You can always change it later......
