mounting the front scope ring to a rail(rra flat-top w/4 rail handguard) or should the receiver have an extension mount to achieve correct eye relief? thanks

Is there anything "wrong"?  No.  Does it leave open the possibilty of movement in your system?  Yes.

To the receiver only is most "sturdy/solid"
To a rail that extends the receiver is 2nd.
To the rail system fwd. the reciever is last.

No matter how "rigid" a rail sysytem is it will never be as rigid as the reciver solely.  Any joint, no matter how well designed gives up rigidity to no joint at all.
