I don't *think* I need the professional version of the kit, it looks like it includes cleaning tools which I've already got.

Thoughts?

Looks pretty good to me. Looks like it has all the basic covered plus more, so you should be G2G.., but then again, I'm a rookie around here so take my opinion for what it's worth.

I've got a few tools from them like the clam shell and handguard removal tool and they have both worked excellent thus far, and I have built and maintained three different rifles with them.  I think you'll be satisfied with the quality, I know I am.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll go ahead and "pull the trigger" on the essentials kit.

Actually I may keep looking. According to Amazon reviews this tool set doesn't come with punch tools, which is the main thing I wanted. Any suggestions on a tool set that also has punch tools and hammer?

Check Brownells for the pieces you need.

I have the Wheeler "professional" kit. Everything seems to be good quality for the price. I also bought the punch set and the screwdriver/bit set. Overall, a nice kit for a good price.

Grace punches, I have the starter punches and the long punches posted above. Great stuff, haven't bent or broken one yet.

I've built all my AR's with a punch set from Sears.

If you're just looking for all the tools necessary to build an AR, I'd recommend against buying that set. You can assemble an entire lower with pair of vise grips, a large flat screwdriver or allen wrench (depending on the types of bolt that holds on your grip), and a maybe a soft mallet to tap in tight trigger pins.

This.  At most you need once punch for trigger guard and bolt release.  If you dont have a hammer laying around then you have bigger problems

Yeah, I think I'm just going to buy a set of punch tools. (I have a hammer) as well as a vice, vice grips, all manner of wrenches and screw drivers.

+1

The vise grip method for installing the roll pins is probably one of the better methods so you don't end up breaking the tabs off the trigger guard:

I'm going to disagree with the vice grip method. It's a lousy way to do it, roll pin starters and punches are superior.

I've used slip joint pliers on the ones I've done.  They work well, but you have to put some material between the receiver and the plier head or you'll scratch the piss out of it.  Patience and being very carful are key.  I will get the appropriate tools to do my next build.
