So I was playing around trying to clean up a stock
When I accidentally sanded through the finish only to find
Brown underneath .

SCORE!!!!!   Looks like a type B to me. I would STOP sanding and get the proper stripper to take all that off.

Why doesnt this shit happen to me?

Man, that's too bad... it looks like you may have ruined a perfectly good black stock.  Maybe some Krylon semi-gloss black paint will bring it back to its former glory.

John,

Be careful - you are the "word" for many retroheads and one just might take you seriously

Ok,,,, Well,, you ain't gunna believe it.

Now that this has turned into something I guess I'll give you the full story.
I've had this for months, bought it  along with some other stuff
From 2000lambovet ( he told me he has a55 gl drum full).
Condition was great ,no defects, good buttpad ,and a  nice even black.
it had a odd rack number on it in a odd place and looks like it was written
On with yellow nail polish, if it wasn't for that number it would have
Gone to my 656 project as intended, and I'd of never known.
I had no indication this was anything but a type D.

So I started sanding with what I thought was 400 grit,
Turns out it was 220 and material was coming off quick.
The black came off easy but the dark grey PRIMER was a little harder,
Well,,,, After calling you guys, I stripped off all the black
And turns out my PRIMER is actually green paint!!

I'm smiling and crying at the same time.
Happy for you, and what you found.
Sad that you sanded through the "primer" so much before realizing what you had in your hands. . .

So, in conclusion. . .

That is sooo cool.  I got a 601 handguard like that, and boy, was it exciting.  I've come across a few type "A" stocks over the years, but have never seen a type "B" in the flesh.  Great catch!

"running to gun room to check the 8 stocks i got from him"

did all 601 stock not have the straw hole?
1/1/2013 7:02:19 PM EDT
[#15]
That can't be a type "B", it has a coated sling swivel.

Total win, congrats. Looks like it would have been almost spotless under that black. If you dont plan on building a 601, Im sure theres a few folks around here that would buy/trade you something good for it!

Yes!!!! I am going back over all mine tommorow .
This looked like a great type D, so if you're stocks aren't mottled,,,,
Could be something hidden underneath

Ya, it just wasn't dawning on me when I was messing with it,
And the Primer ( green paint)  didn't look green, it was dark grey.
It wasn't till I took off the paint with thinner that you could see the
Green at all,  but ya, it would have been a like new stock

It would have been perfect. This was going to be my " beater" stock,
I was going to take it to work tomorrow to hit it with a orbital sander
To try my hand at wrapping it with fiberglass for my prototype build.

I've build a new looking 601, since I sanded to the brown on top
It would probably be a good BFPU  but I'm not sure I want to start build #16.
Have to sleep on it

Yes, it is brown on the inside, at least for a inch or so.

I know right .  Everybody should take a look at what they have
Or what they might be buying. This stock inside and out looked like
A basic type D.  With a nice black paint job and a rack number.
So I'm guessing the military at some point painted over some stocks?
Either way, I'll bet there is more out there

Yes and Law Enforcement 601's are found black.  I've been looking at pics online for a while now hoping to catch a glint of green or brown.
Thankfully you caught it.
