Hi all!
I have been off playing with my AKs, so haven't been around the Ar world too much. Anyway, here is the deal. I bought one of the Ares conversions back when they were $199, installed it on my upper, and finally got a chance to shoot it yesterday. What I have: 1)Transferable pre-86 conversion in 5.56. 2) M16A1 full stock/buffer/tube/spring 3) 10.5 Bushmaster heavy barrel on a Colt M16A1 upper (no chrome) What it does: I get one, maybe two rounds out of it, and the bolt short strokes, leaving the fired round in the upper reciever, and strips a round half out of the mag. I tried it with a surplus 20 rd, new surplus 30 rd, and a Pmag. I tried yellow box Norinco (which my SAR3 sails the brass out of sigh), and USGI WC. Same results. The rifle functioned fine in with this upper when it was a gas gun. I am thinking that there is a a "dwell time" issue with the short barrel, and/or the full sized buffer/spring setup is too much resistence. The kit got installed on this barrel because it is the only carbine length upper I have in 5.56. I would like to purchase a 14.5" upper, and install this kit in it, but only if it will work correctly. Any ideas? Thanks! |
| try a heavier extractor spring and a telestock assembly with standard buffer it may be the buffer has too much mass its 5.5oz and longer than a carbine buffer although stocks shouldnt matter. The HBAR 10.5 Bushmaster barrel should be chromelined.Did u put he spring infront of the gas cyclinders spigot when it went into the front sight base? Also the Bushmaster ARES licensed piston the use has an arm that clamps to the gas cylinder and barrel to keep it more rigid. |

Pun Thanks for the reply. The first thing I thought of was the extractor spring, but it seems to be holding the base of the cartridge firmly into the bolt face. Since the spring costs almost nothing, I will change it just to be sure. I only mentioned the stock setup because I knew there was a difference in buffer size and spring length between the rifle and collapsible stocks. I don't own a carbine stock assembly, so I will have to pick up a buffer to try it out. The barrel is from the 1980's, and I bought it knew from Bushmaster w/o chrome lining. The new version of the Arens conversion does not include the spring you mention. I knew that Bushmaster used to sell the Ares conversion. I don't know if the clamp is needed, but I guess Ares thought not since they left it off their kits! |
