Took my new build to the range today to get everything sighted in and right off the bat I had issues. At first when charging, the bolt would not completely close, sounded and looked like it did, but just got a click when fired and no dents to the primer. Ejected that round and chambered another, same thing. Messed with for a few rounds and finally got a few to fire. Then it was not wanting to feed the round from the mag, partial feeds and jams. Changed mags with same results. Got repeated similar results over the next hour or so with only about 25% of the rounds acting correctly. Some of the rounds after the failed battery would not eject and it would take a massive pull on the charging handle to get the bolt un-stuck. After fighting with it for about an hour and a half I was about to give up and just shoot another rifle and I decided to swap BCG. Took a Fail Zero from another rifle, loaded about 15 rounds in the mag, and it worked flawless. Loaded up another 15 or so rounds and again perfect.
I then decided to try yet another BCG, so I put in the $79 one from AIM I just received and perfect, fired about 20 rounds without any issues. So just for the hell of it, I tried a Shadow Ops blem BCG I had in a different rifle and once again, no issues, gun performed perfect. What could be wrong with the Spikes BCG? Don't notice anything visually comparing it side by side with one of the others. Any ideas? |

Could be tolerance stacking. In any case did you contact Spikes before posting this? Give them a chance to solve your problem! Haven't contacted Spikes, thought it might just be something simple I may be overlooking. Not trying to throw Spikes under the bus. Edit: email sent to Spikes |

Barrel is Blackhole Weaponry, but don't think it's the barrel since it ran fine with 3 different BCG's. Quoted:

Headspace issue. Get go-no go gauges. The barrel or bolts have an issue. What is the barrel? Barrel is Blackhole Weaponry, but don't think it's the barrel since it ran fine with 3 different BCG's. Why would you use 3 different BCG's in one rifle?

You tried different bolts in that rifle and they all worked fine, but did you try the Spikes bolt in any other rifles to see if it did the same thing in them? I didn't, at that point I had been fighting the issue for a while and was really frustrated when I tried a different BCG. After the other BCG's worked I put the rifle up and did some shooting with another rifle. I got a email back from Spikes last night and I'm sure they will take care of what ever the issue ends up being. |

trying out those different bcg's was a smart move - at least you seem to have identified the source of the problem. i agree that it is most likely a headspace issue. you say new build, both the Spike's bcg AND barrel are brand new? Yes, everything is new. |

What is Tolerance Stacking? "Consider a cylinder and a pipe where the former has to fit into the latter (imagine your bolt-carrier and upper receiver). Let's say we manufacture the cylinder to be 1" in diameter, with a tolerance +/- 0.1" Now let's say we manufacture the pipe to have an inner diameter to be 1.1", with a tolerance +/- 0.1" You can see where this might lead. It's possible that our process will produce a cylinder 1.1" in diameter, and then a pipe with a 1.0" inner diameter, their tolerances have "stacked" to produce an undesirable result. This is no good. In gun manufacturing, I imagine that the tolerances are a lot smaller, but then again we're dealing with systems more complicated than two parts that just have to fit together. So if you have seven or eight parts that have to fit and move together as an assembly, and their tolerances start to stack up, then you have a gun that might not work right." |

Spike's is really good about responding to emails. I sent them an email last week about a NIB BCG that was starting to wear a bit premature (1yr, <2Krnds).. The coating is wearing off to the point that I see red (rust) areas after I clean it. I have to oil quickly to keep it from getting ugly. Whatever coating is left is a shiny black. Anyway, Spike's Lifetime warranty doesn't mean sh!t for something like this. It only covers "manufacturing defects". I hope it means something for the OP's issue. They told me that was "normal". Hate to bash Spike's since I own a ton of their stuff, but I won't be buying anything with a spider on it again... Good luck with your BCG. So far Spikes has been great. The first email response I received was after hours so I didin't have to wait until the next day for a reply, and since then we have bounced back several emails checking different things that could be causing the issue. I feel sure they'll make it right. |

I've been looking for the right phrase and description for this. Tolerance Stacking...got it. Thanks! |

| With the holiday I have not received my RMA yet to send the BCG back but I did have a chance to go to the range this morning. I swapped the bolt in the Spikes carrier with one from another rifle and the gun ran perfect, single shots, double taps, and complete 20 round mag dumps all worked perfect. The Spikes bolt in the different carrier in the other rifle, other than one FTE on the 4th round in the first mag, ran good. The tolerance stacking posted earlier in the thread may have been the issue and the bolt could not move freely enough to operate correct. I've sent my results to Spikes and will await a response. |
