I was cleaning up the shop tonight, looking at a number of spare parts on the bench, and thought "what if..."

That's a Colt slab-side lower, with an A1 large-hole upper with forward assist and shell deflector, Bushy pre-ban fluted Dissipator barrel, full-length SP1 handguards, and straight SP1 slip-ring.
The top pic shows a Micro-Dot 1.5-4.5X20 scope on a DPMS Tri-Mount. A laser and flashlight will be added to the side rails.
As I said, just for fun.
I'm thinking about cutting down an SP1 barrel to 18" to do a like setup. Anyone tried cutting a 20" barrel down to 18" without relocating the gas port?

That's a kick-ass looking carbine!

I've read here somewhere about cutting 20-inch barrels, and IIRC, the gas port has to be opened up a little; other than that, no biggie. The "build it yourself" forum would be the best place to get the straight skinny on that.

Bandit,I got a Dissipator upper with the last M16 I bought.I personally dont care for them.I did pretty much what you did.I used a slab side M16 upper with A1 hand gaurds and put on a 3 prong flash suppressor.Colt tried cutting a 20" barrel down to 15" for the first CAR 15,model 605.I dont think it worked well with the gas port.My Dissipator works fine.I just wish it was not a heavy barrel.SJR556.
