I just installed one on my carbine and was wondering about the top rail. Do I cover the top rail or leave it bare? issues with covering it? heat?

No real issues that I know with covering it. Just comes down to whatever looks better to you.

Or just put a cover wherever you think you may hurt your hand on it.

You'll be fine with covering it.

Sometimes I cover my top rail, sometimes no, it depends if I'm using a VFG or not.

I usually cover the top rail when I don't use a VFG because I grasp it sometimes all the way up to the top rail.

When I'm using a VFG I just cover it with Magpul ladder rail covers just to protect my webbing and gear from the sharp edges of the rail.

No issues with covering the upper rail at all from my experiences here in the hot desert where I'm at during summer, even the KAC installation instructions shows and describes how to install their cover to the noted rail.

I cover the top rail. Don't really need it. I also sometimes hold onto that area.
