Bought a new('06) RAS and the top rail, where it slides into the handguard cap, used to be a stainless hook, now it's a flat straight piece of stainless to hold the rail in place.   Also, the slotted screw that tightens the claw to the bbl nut is now hex.   Anybody know when these changes were made?

Dunno.  Have been issued both.  Think they changed it to hex to keep LTs from taking them apart.

I believe it is the other way round.

The hook replaced the tab since people would install the RAS with the tab over the handguard cap.
I believe the slotted screw replaced the hex so that it was field serviceable.

Believe this. Guys used to bring me guns when they could figure out what was wrong. More than a couple trying to put handguards back on with the tab over the retaining plate.

But that was pretty late... like 2009. And they were close to new guns I believe. Only saw the tab and hex. Hex was probably to make them NOT serviceable...

What year did they change to hook?

2008-2009 or so.

That said the slotted screw can be had for $3 online, and the front hook is so people can't install the rail wrong.

The front hook is basically a dummy proof mod that's not needed for anyone with two brain cells, and doesn't actually enhance the rail.
