Curious since seeing so many railed lowers sold alone. Would a KAC rail lower fit with a standard carbine upper? I ask because I haven't really handled them as a separate item off of an AR. Doesn't look like they would.

what is a railed lower?

I don't quite understand what you are asking because you are mashing together terms that don't go together.

As in hand guards. Quad rails. Lower hand guard, upper hand guard

Uh... you are asking if the lower half of a KAC quad rail will fit the upper half of another manufacturers?  No.

If you are asking if you can put a KAC lower on another manufacturers upper.. Yes.

There is no such thing as a railed lower.

A railed upper typically means an upper receiver group with a rail installed.  The rail itself has nothing to to with lowers and you are not limited to any lower because of the rail system used.

I still am not quite sure what you are asking, but I hope this helps.

The reason many times you see the lower rails sold alone is:

a) people upgrading to the UK SAS lower rail with the RAS 2 clamp for the lower rail as well

b) military weapons that have had M203s mounted, and "loose" lower rails that "escaped."

I have seen one picture from an older Trijicon ad of a soldier with an M16A2 with a standard top handguard and what appears to be a KAC M5 bottom rail.  Maybe someone can find it and post it.

In all practicality, there's no reason it "couldn't" work, though you'd probably have to bend, cut, or remove the heatshield - but the delta ring spring tension would keep it there, it just wouldn't be very sturdy.  A far better option, IMHO, would just be to use an add-on rail or buy the whole railed handguard, top and bottom.
