So today at a gun show I picked up a used KAC RAS hand guard. Theres some damage where the delta ring locks the hand guard in. I think once its pinned down by the fsb and handguard cap there shouldnt be an issue.

So another thing about this rail system I found interesting is the top of the handguard has a purple tint on the finish. Is the purple tint normal?

Mine is purple, too.

Mine is black, but I've seen lots of others that are purple. Normal with anodizing.

Seen plenty of both on A4 and M4s.  Normal.

I believe I read that the purple color can be a result of UV exposure of the anodizing, lots of sunshine use. Correct me if I am wrong.
I have several KAC sets that are all black with various levels of used, none purple.

I reread some info after posting this and found the color can be from contaminants in the anodizing (as pointed out in later posts).
I have seen some well used KAC RAS sets with purplish tints, someone posted excessive UV exposure was responsible, I dunno??

I got one of the factory seconds, and it has a slight purple tint.  I can't find anything else wrong with it, so I assume that is the reason.

I believe Mike at NDS posted about this at one time - he spoke with Victor, and the consensus seems to be that it may be some minute contaminant in the batch  - something you try and control but may not be able to. Interesting about the solar exposure, but there are enough newer parts around like this that I doubt it. The receiver block on my M249 stock is purple. I mean PURPLE. It'll get reanodized if it gets machined for an AK or something. At this point it sits in the closet with all it's useless friends.

I believe you are right on both.

I have seen new purple uppers and lowers.

One of my troops M249 but stock and feed tray cover turned deep purple when it was formerly  a very nice black and I doubt it was the CLP that caused the color change.

I have had motorcycle parts anodized color fade over time when kept outdoors and have seen aircraft parts do the same.

It would not surprise me if chemical contaminants in the anodizing solution or lesser grade alloys hasten the color change also.

I believe the dyes used in anodizing are similar to the dyes used in clothing. We would have to ask a chemist familiar with the subject to be sure.
