Finally got my barrel back from ADCO, and completed my basic rifle.  Because, you know, I needed one.  Now I sit here looking at the CompML3 I have sitting on the shelf...

Question for you guys:  This is my first Smith Vortex, and they pinned the flats at an off-angle.  I am just used to the flats being perpendicular to the rail.  Thoughts??

The pictures blow, I still need to get my index clips on there, and take pics in the daylight.  Got dark on me quick tonight after work.

Hope to get her out tomorrow and sight it in.  Not bad for a simple, basic build.

This was as simple as I get I am having a panic attack about the Aimpoint not being on there, and only 7 freaking inches of free float.

But, I didn't have one in the safe, and I had room.

Hah. I can relate to that. This is more KISS than I've been able to stomach myself to do yet due to the FSB.

I still know I need a PR though. I'll push myself over the edge eventually and do a nice KISS 14.5" carbine FSB PR build.

I have one more with the FSB, but with a Triji 1-4 so I don't see it.  I just dig the A2 when shooting irons.  It took me quite a while to get used to the HK style Troys I have on my others.  But, I am getting too damned old to sit here and act like I don't simply love my Aimpoints.

I just wanted to build one like this for fun.  I have a long winter ahead of me, and it will likely "evolve"

Most people seem to equate "KISS" rifles with "very inexpensive" rifles.  Obviously, you're not one of those folks!  I see the simplicity, but I also see application of "lessons learned" regarding what works for you.  Not bad choices, any of them, and where it counts (like the DD barrel-I have one just like it), very good choices.

Thanks fellas, and thanks for the info on the Smith.  Wasn't a big deal to me, just struck me odd.  I had originally wanted the Surefire, but ADCO was out of stock at the time.  Appreciate the reinforcement!  They did a nice pin and weld, as usual.

A Tango Down Stubby QD VFG I had in the bin has found its way to the Centurion, so it is a bit less "simple" now

With a railed upper, there is always the temptation to hang silly shit on by the sixth inning.  If it's KISS it's irons, period end.
But no problemo on the adjustable stock.

Not to poop on anyone, but I just don't buy the whole "KISS" thing.

If a given rifle is you "KISS" rifle, by implication you're saying that you're of the habit of needlessly bolting random shit to your other rifles.

All of my rifles, except for some of the more hardcore clones are "KISS."  They have exactly as much stuff as they need to do the job they need to do, and nothing more.

For some rifles, that might be an ELCAN with an MRD and an IR laser.  For some that might be nothing but plastic handguards and iron sights.  But they're all as simple as they can be to fulfill their roles.

My idea of KISS is using only what "I" think I need...

My HD rig

NiB bcg and fcg (ease of cleaning)(ICE Arms bcg ACT fcg)
BCM Mod4 CH and Mod0 grip (all my ARs get these)
Aimpoint Comp4 (so I can leave it on for 100yrs and not worry about it)(also see-thru caps installed)
LMT rear sight
SureFire M600U on IWC mount (alot of land to cover so I needed a bright light)
USGI sling

I'm going to agree with Augee. I didn't slap a magnet on my rifle and drag it through a gun shop to see what would stick. Everything on it has a purpose and is there for a reason. I'm not putting a quad rail on just to run a VFG, I'm talking to you Alaska511
9/22/2013 8:41:58 AM EDT
[#38]

Now come on.  I simply don't care for stock handguards.

A quad with LaRue clips is by far, my favorite.  I have many others that I have tried.  I have rifles with 3 of these Centurions, 1 wiith a Fortis, 1 with Apex Extended, and 1 with a  Troy FF quad.  I do have one all stock rifle in the safe, unmolested for the time being.

I just wanted to assemble a high quality rifle, with minimal ninja add-ons.  Still, I do prefer the quad with clips as a minumum, and I need a hand-stop.  I like the TD VFG as a hand stop.

Great pics, guys  This was never me saying what KISS was, or should be.  Not once, and I like seeing what you guys are shooting.  Keep 'em coming

Oh, I know you were
Even my "busier" rifles are fairly simple, IMO.  A light, sling, and red dot at the most.  I do not subscribe to the BADASS/ambi controls/anti-rotation bling of the month club, or anything like that.  I just have scopes on the others, and a sling.  Good triggers, FF HGs, and a good stock are the things I go for first.  My other 14.5s are below, the BCM/BFH  flies an Aimpoint and Troys, now.  The is a crop of a family pic after I finished building it.

Windham Weaponry Heavy Barrel. Magpul stock and pistol grip are all it has. I went with the magpul stock because I like the rubber on the shoulder pad. I might add a vertical grip but I'm not sure. This is pretty simple in my book.

IMO a true down to the brand M4gery is KISS.  Because this is the year 2013 and we have shit like Aimpoints and ACOGS that are better and tougher than most junky iron sights.  You can buy all of it off the shelf, it bolts on, it works and lasts.

On the internet, KISS is 1960's style carbines.

On the internet, smug assholes half ass bolt a bunch of shit to plastic handguards and call it 'a fighting gun'.

On the internet, gear queers who can't even shoot irons are swapping buis for different buis and stripping out their barrel nut every two weeks for the newest free-float modular piece of shit keymod tube on their Magpulled out 'training platform'.

On the internet, Frog Lubers blow their guns with their mom's hair dryers and contaminate all the kitchen appliances and utensils with that goofy shit.    And find out that the shit congeals into glue before they save up enough allowance to go shooting again.

I could go on but it's past my bedtime and I don't wanna get in trouble.

She's a sweetie.  Probably my last carbine build except for my 11.5s but the set up is great with the Wolf spring and an H2 shooting 855.
