| Would someone please explain the meaning of this to me? I've seen the markings and I've seen people mention it but I don't understand what it is. I read the faq and reveiwed many pages of posts here and I didn't find an answer. If anyone can help me I would be grateful. I own one AR and I'm building another. I'm trying to familiarize myself with these details to help when I make purchases, Thanks! |

Those are just proof marks that the forging manufacturer puts into the white forgings (no, most firearm manufacturers do not forge their receivers, they are outsourced). The keyhole is the mark left by cerro, and that is the most common forge mark on a Colt product these days. There are many other companies that forge receivers though.
Think of them like your coins, if you look at any American coin you have, it has either an "S" or a "D" in the design. This signifies where it was minted, Denver or San Francisco. Think of the keyhole, the square, the AF, etc. as something similar to that. |
