Has anyone on this board shot an AR so much that the bullets began to keyhole from the barrel being worn out?  How many rounds?

Has anyone ever even seen this phenominon?  I'm not interested in rifles that were damaged / out of spec from the beginning.

seen it with a few ipsc pistols and one AR, but it was later found out the SOB was using green tip in a A1 1/12 barrel. Switched to 55gr and all was right in the world once more.

its funny you post this, i just about to post a related topic. i was at the range yesterday with an old RRA that i bought as my first AR in 2006. ive put close to 10,000 rounds through the barrel. and now it keyholes like a son-of-abitch! but only with  55gr-fmj (specifically ga arms). its shoots just  fine with M855.  the barrel is a 14.7" SS 1:9 twist RRA.( it used to be an 16in hbar but i had it cut down to govt profile and shortened/pinned).

i started shooting and for the first 2 magazines all rounds were spot on. good clean strikes (again with ga arms fmj m193- note: this was also a newer batch, purchased in the last 3 months, of ammo) but as the shooting went on, about the 3-4 magazine i got to an older batch of ga arms. every round started to key hole. im mean fucking bad, quarter sized strikes at 25 yards) im thinking jesus here we go again. i know for sure my barrel is more than likely wore the fuck out. but as long as she still shoots straight ill hold off on getting it re-barreled. ill just steer away from shooting m193 with it, or just try different ammo. i havent had a test trial with different ammo brands yet. i need to do that.

A terrible pic of yesterdays keyholing action. it hurts to look at this but you get the idea.

barrel: RRA 14.7' SS 1:9 twist
ammo: Ga arms m193 FMJ canned heat

I've had several shooting 62gr from a 1/12 barrel.  Great gun, just couldn't handle handle today's ammo.

I almost had a nice Howa varmint rig with a 1/12 barrel bought cheap from a buddy that was feeding it green tips from his AR.

That is until I shot a 5 round group at a 100 with my .55 grn hand loads that he could cover with his pinky nail.

He didn't want to sell it anymore for some reason.
