Hello, I am curious about something...  Many of the AR15 parts suppliers, such as J&T, M&A, M1S, etc. will allow you to swap out components of a kit or upper to suit your needs.  Often these changes incur an additional charge.

In one case in point, a reputable seller offers to swap the standard FSB with a piccatinny gas block for $42.  Ok, fine and dandy, but when I shopped their site further I saw that the gas block by itself was $42.  So... if a person buys a barrel and has such a swap done will they get the original part as well?  Seems to me like if I bought the barrel in question I already paid for an FSB, especially if the barrels are assembled to order...

I know a lot of guys don't want to swap their own parts out, but it strikes me that the difference in prices between an FSB and a gas block shouldn't be that high, even accounting for installation.  To further aggravate it, at least in my eyes, is I wanted to install a FF tube, so having the gas block installed was just more work for me, cause I'd have to remove it anyway to install the FF tube!

Any thoughts on this?

I can only speak for us at M&A.

Our Shotgun News ads are a great way to understand the process. On the left side, you will see "Kits", and the column to the right of that is for "Barreled Uppers".

Look below those two columns and you'll see the "options and upgrades".

In the example you state, the substitution price- to remove a standard A2 sight base and do you a Picattiny rail gas block is $35. We keep the old A2 and you get the build the way you want it.

To buy that Picatinny rail gas block as a stand-alone item would be $45.

That's how we do it anyway.

The website has substitution options shown below most configurations. It's farirly new, so we get any number of calls if people can't assemble just what they want via the internet ordering platform.
