I know this has been posted before but I never check the mag forum unless I have a question and the search feature is down.  Anyway, is Krylon ok for refinishing mags?  And do I have to put them in the oven or just take them apart, clean them, spray them and let them air dry?  Thanks.

IM or email Hawkeye because I believe he was the one that used Krylon on his mags and posted pictures.

Although I think mag refinishing it a total waste of time; If I were to do so, Krylon would be more than adequate.

A lot of people go way overboard on this type of thing, with the baking and all this nonsense.  It can get really silly.

Krylon would be fine.

Being metal, a quick coat of Krylon primer wouldn't hurt.

Can I ask why?  I am refinishing them because I friend of mine gave me some of his really really old Marine issued ones and the anodizing or whatever its called is almost all the way gone.  Why would it be a waste of time to refinish them?  I got a couple cans of Krylon trying to work up the nerve to paint my rifle and I thought these old mags would be a good starting point.

markm is saying that the finish has no impact on how the mags function.

Krylon is fine for painting mags. I have all my range mags painted to match my Coyote Brown furniture. I even Kryloned my rear A2 cut down carry handle. The only part that wears is on the adjustment wheel, since its plastic.

Well I did two old 20's today and it actually turned out better than I expected.  I got two cans of Krylon from WalMart for like $2.50 a piece, one was OD Green and the other was Earth Brown.  It was the Krylon Camo cans.  I did one mag in each color.  First I took them apart and got a bucket with warm water and a little dish soap.  I used a SOS pad and just cleaned them up a bit.  Then I cut a hanger into two small hooks and took them outside.  I did the OD first and it took me a second to realize I was holding it way to close and it looked like it was going to have runs, but when it dried it looked fine.  After I sprayed them I bent the ends of the hooks and hung them off a shelf in the garage.  It was over 90 today so they were dry in no time.  The can says dry to the touch in 30 min and fully dried at 2 hours.  I gave them 3 just to be sure.  It looks real cool because I didn't get it even is some spots but that just give it a more 3D camo look to it.  Sorry no digi cam.  Just thought I'd share.

You guys and your Krylon shit.

I swear if I hear one more "I just painted my gun"
                                  "I just painted my mag"
"I just painted my scope to match"

I will go off the deep end and............
Purchase some freaking Krylon and do my AR & mags and Rem 870.

I swear the crap I have to put up with around here!

Almost

I have been thinking hard on painting my SBR AR. After reading all of the Post showing the paint jobs on their weapons. I have the itch to spray something soon.

I would start with some old mags or an ammo can first cause some of these guys make it look real easy.  I don't know how some of them do it.  I will definately need more practice before I screw up a $1k rifle.
