I put together a DPMS SASS rifle with a 18" SASS barrel.  I bought about 60 150 grain federal rounds and upon shooting them I got through about 15 of them and I had a misfeed, not a jam.  I charged a round and I shot about six more, same problem.  Charged again, same problem.  I cleaned the chamber and barrel, I got about 20 threw this time and then the problem started again.  The next time I went to the range, I hand loaded some 168 grain A-MAX.  I shot about 60 threw it without cleaning it before I had a feeding problem.  Its a new barrel, any suggestions, this problem needs to be corrected

Need a little more info on what kind of miss feed but here is the general problems and solutions that have worked me...:

Make sure everything is clean and well lubed.

THe next thing to consider is the type of jam your are getting. if the round it not ejecting correctly and the extractor lets go early it will try to feed the next round onthe mag and jam....this looks like a empty brass on top of the round tryuing to be fed. this type of jam needs either a new spring\oring setup for the extractor or a new extractor...(try a D-fender or 2 small orings around that spring. Make sure the ejector is functioning correctly as well.

If the round extracts correcly and still seems to strip the round incorreclty and the bullet nose dives into the feed ramps or up into the top of the reciever...this problem is usually a mag problem....make sure you have the GenII mags from armalite. THen you need to adjust the lips of the mag to either up or down...Sometimes if the mag lips angles are too high the bolt will loose contact while its trying to strip the round out of the mag and cause the jam.

With out knowing your exact setup and specific malfunction...try looking for the symptoms I outlined and walk backwards step by step to isolate the problem...

hope something there will help with your problem but alot of the time its a process of elimination...

keep us updated....

remember to try different ammo and mags as well....

BTW....alot of guys will tell you to fire the gun at least 200 rounds to break it in...keep that in mind as welll

sounds like new mags with stiff springs to me, but a pic would really be helpful.  Try flexing the springs by pushing down on the follower with a ruler a hundred time/mag.

Next, take a look at the fired brass.  Do you have long scratches that start at the shoulder and go all the way to the rim?  If so, you probably have sharp edges on the mag lips.  Take a piece of 800 grit sandpaper and break the sharp edges.

Last, take a look at the feed ramps.  Do you have a lot of copper built up?  If so, they could use a little polishing.....you're better off just shooting it vs breaking out the Dremel--it's hard to put metal back once you're removed it.

This is a DPMS rifle so I dont think the armalite mags will work correctly.  The brass ejects correctly everytime, I'm just not getting another round chambered every 10-15 or so with a 150 grain, with a 168 grain it went 60 or so without this problem.  Once I start having this problem, its like every 5 or so until I clean it.

Thanks for the feedback

Do you have more than one mag, to eliminate a mag issue?

You really don't provide a good enough description of what you see. "Failure to feed" has many potential causes. Describe exactly how the new cartridge ends up in relation to the chamber. A pic or 2 would be better.

Is the bolt/bolt carrier sloppy wet with lube? New rifles need to be sloppy wet until they break in and all the rough surfaces wear in. If it stops choking after you clean it (and lube it), that is a clue that it may be running too dry.

When you chamber a round and extract it (without firing), what markings do you see on the bullet and case? (Pics needed here too)

Does the FTF always occur when feeding from the left side of the mag? Or right side?

As mentioned previously, do you have more than one mag? Does the problem follow one mag?

Ill have to inspect it with more detail, but I have only one mag at this time, i will pick up another and see if this fixes the problem, I keep it well lube before i go to the range, when i go back out to the range i will keep it lubed.  The new cartridge never ends up in the chamber to answer that question, it ejects properly, but the bolt never chambers another round.  Thats all the answers i have for now i will post more info when i get it.  thank you
