So I put on a Larue 9" handguard in the process of building my first AR and I thought it was hard to align.  Am I missing something?  The handguard has the pins on the spacer that slips into the included barrel nut, but that requires the barrel nut to be perfectly aligned.  The barrel nut obviously has to be aligned so that the gas tube can feed through, but there is some room for play.  I had to try many times to get it just right so that the top rail of the handguard aligned with the rail on the upper.  Is there an easy way to guarantee the alignment?  Also, it seems the spacing from the rail to barrel is off from side to side by slight amount (I don't have the numbers I measured in front of me right now).  Is this common?  I'm glad I decided not to go with a front BUIS, rather than the FSB, other wise I might have some serious sighting issues.  Did I do something wrong?  Or am I being to exacting?  Any help is appreciated.

Toward the end of the install, bridge the top of the rail to the top of your flattop upper using a detachable carry handle.
