So I won a lower in the team giveaway (thank you Arfcom).  Now I am left trying to decide what to do with it.  I think I am going to build a rifle for my father in law because he has been wanting one for a while now.  He is a lefty and wants a left handed gun.  This brings me to my question.

1) I have a stag barrel from a gun I changed several years ago.  It was on a right handed gun but that should not matter correct?

2) Based on price of uppers and BCG's would it be cheaper to just buy a complete upper from ARsales?

1. Correct I believe the only difference is the bolt and the upper receiver.

2. It CAN be cheaper if you build it yourself if you shop smart.

Yes, barrel is the same. Differences are Upper Receiver and BCG
Building yourself can still be inexpensive, if you shop around.
I am not lefty, but have built many left handed guns, and they are awesome.  Spit brass back at those right handers!
Check out Stag and Rock River Arms.
Also stag i think makes a left handed saftey.

As a left hand shooter myself, I never understood the whole lefty rifle thing, buuuut as others have said Stag is pretty much a one stop shop for lefty parts.

As a left handed shooter I just put an ambi safety on my AR's. Never have a problem.

If you want a left handed AR, Rock River makes them. The left handed uppers only work with their left handed lowers though.

RRA left handed rifle barrels, for some reason have a left hand twist. They say it torques the barrel in favor of left handed shooters.

I'm a lefty shooter and never found a cause to buy a semi auto rifle tailored to lefties. I shoot ARs and a SOCOM 16 without problems.
Now bolt action is a different story.

Oh so very new to this whole venture.  Only just recently started acquring parts for my first AR build and this site has been fantastic.  I'm a lefty and was originally looking at building a lefty rifle, but have since decided to build a standard rifle with several ambidexterous features so my wife and others won't have issues with it.  That being said, during my search for parts, I found Stag Arms to have the most lefty dedicated parts of the several brands I looked at.  RRA has stuff too, but as mentioned above there seems to be some proprietary stuff going on.

Perhaps my build will help, or perhaps not, but here goes any way, be gentle (I'm new here):

Stag Lower, Stag LPK with Ambi Selector, Rainier Arms Upper Combo (really like their Raptor Charging Handle), and Troy Ambidexterous Mag Release.  Didn't do anything special with the Bolt Catch till I try it out, but might select the DPMS Tactical one if I want something bigger to hit with my trigger finger.  I've selected the rest of the parts I'd like for my build as well, but I'm sure they will change somewhat, and what I listed are the only real components that should be of interest for a lefty build that would differ from a standard build.  As long as the upper has a brass deflector, which I think almost all of them do, he should be good to go with the port on the right side.

I think evlsmrk has the right way of going about a left hand build. I too am a lefty as well. The reason i would stick to a dedicated right hand upper is bcg parts in my opinion would be easier to find. Correct me if im wrong.

Did not know there was such a thing.  He might get a righty with ambi parts.

They aren't the only manufacturers of them either, Norgon comes to mind as well, but the Troy one doesn't cost as much.  I really wanted to go all lefty since it was going to be my rifle, but the more I thought about it, the less I liked the idea.

Your going to get every body and their grandmother telling you how their left-handed and shoot right handed rifles.  But the truth is if your Pops in law plans to ever shoot suppressed or is like me and consider 300 rds to just be be enough to break in a rifle then a left side ejecting rifle is a must.  Not much out there for BIY except a few uppers.
