| Im building an ar-15 and i shoot lefty. What ambi controls are good? |
| I'm lefty, I got my rifle completly standard, I have just taught myself to release the mag with my right hand and flip the safety with my index finger. I trained myself that way so that if I were in a situation where I had to grab somebody elses rifle I wouldn't be fumbling with the safety or mag release. |

in a time when so much stuff is available to make your shooting experience that much better, why not go all out?
my wife and several of my friends are left handed so i deal with the lefty topic a lot. for a selector i recommend the JP . it's reversible if you should ever need/want to use it on a "regular" AR. it installs easily and is very simple to adjust. i've never cared for ambi selectors, i can't stand that lever under my trigger finger. the NORGON works well and most people seem to like them just fine. again it's an easy upgrade and for the money it's well worth it. that and it comes standard on left handed NOVESKEs the ACLM charging handle has been a big hit with my local left handed shooters. i will say this though, when used on a "regular" AR in a left handed position there is very little room for your right hand to work the handle. the forward assist is in the way and it takes a bit of practice to catch the edge of the handle correctly. on a left handed upper it's absolutely a necessary upgrade, IMHO. |

Which ways better to work the bolt release: sending you hand on the handguards under the rifle and hitting it, or taking you hand off the pistol grip and hitting it? I use a wilson combat oversized bolt release on some of my rifles. It's movable, and in the rearward position you can easily press the bolt release with your trigger finger. Use red loctite on the setscrew so it doesn't back out. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=918614 |

i have the Knights mag release and it works well. I've never tried the Norgon though but I think it's cost less.. I have this on my left handed ar. Works well, need to add it to my other rifles. I wish ambi safety's would come back into stock. Most vendors seem to be out of them and I need a few more as well. |

You should at least get an ambi safety and an ambi mag release. You will be able to get along without ambi controls but there is no reason to force yourself to use the right handed controls if you don't have to. One of the things that makes ARs so great is the superb ergonomics. You should also look into getting an ambi charging handle. It will make it a lot easier to clear malfunctions.
I am a lefty and I like the Norgon Ambi Catch. I have it on all my "go to" ARs. |

If you're training for worst case scenarios, then why not also account for being shot in or otherwise losing use of your right or left hand/arm too? Magpul's AOTC II DVD shows drills being run under this exact simulation. There are plenty of options for setting up your AR's with ambi controls and it doesn't make any sense to ignore them completely, especially if you shoot lefty. I currently use each of these on my rifles: - ambi selector - Norgon ambi mag release (excluding the rifle that has a Redi-Mod) - ACLM ambi charging handle (this works great!) - and Magpul's B.A.D. lever. |
