So I have a lefty Stag, and it has a 16" 1:9 barrel with their ambi barrel extension, and I'm looking to swap out the barrel with an 18" 1:8 or 1:7 barrel. Do I really need to worry about getting a barrel with an ambi barrel extension?

Do you shoot a lot of heavy weight bullets 70gr+?

A left hand bolt rotates the opposite direction, so the ambi barrel extensions are beveled on both sides of the locking lugs.

Some have reported that a regular barrel extension will work, personally I would get an ambi extension.

Not currently. But I didn't think the barrel would handle them well. Plus I want to do an SPR clone-ish type deal.

You might be surprised,  as far as the ambi extension it sounds like what you need..

Will any standard AR barrel work with an ambi extension?

Extensions are not interchangeable. They are installed during manufacture and should be considered an integral part of the barrel.

This. Extensions are torqued prior to gas port drilling for reasons that should be obvious.

Ps - I have over 1,500 rounds through a lefty upper that had the barrel swapped with a BCM m4 barrel after the first 20 rounds. There isn't even any finish wear on the bolt lugs. Barrel extension handedness has been a non-issue in my case. That said, I have had another barrel (not BCM) with a very sharp-edged extension that may not have worker with a lefty bolt as well.

Other than Stag Arms, who sells barrels with ambi extensions? At this point, I'm not sure I want to take the risk, however small it is, on buying a barrel that won't work with my rifle or cause even just slightly less reliable operation.

If it was me I'd call Compass Lake Engineering and get one made with a Stag extension and intermediate gas system.

Ok, well I don't know if it's possible to buy a stag ambi extension as of right now. I only found one on cobra tactical and the website says the lead time for them is 1 year. I may just snag a 18" 1:8 with a rifle length gas system and an ambi from stag's website and see how it does.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know if the barrel but that you attach a Sampson Star-C rail to is proprietary? I'm considering getting a longer free float handguard and was trying to figure if I need a new barrel nut.

White Oak Armory will make a barrel with a stag ambi barrel extension. I have a 16" on my upper that they made.

No idea if the Sampson uses a proprietary barrel nut, but if it does it will come with it, you won't need to purchase anything additional.
