I got one of my coworkers hooked on AR's.  He has one complete Adams Arms and several lowers he is working on.  He is left handed and has no trouble with the AA.  However, he was considering getting a DI upper he found cheap.  He wants to go lightweight so one is slick sided and doesn't have the case deflector and he was concerned about brass smacking his face so I told him to not get the slick side.  But then I told him that with a right hand DI gun he may experience gas blown into his face from the gas being blown into the breech.

I've never shot an AR on the wrong side.  I know I should practice that now and then but admit I never have.

Can any lefties out there tell me what it's like shooting hundreds of rounds from a right handed AR?  Will it be worth it to stick with piston or building an upper with a Stag lefty?

I am left handed and have no problems at all. I have shot strings of hundreds of rounds with no gas blowing back on my face or anything. I would never consider a left hand upper/lower/whatever..., the AR15 the way it is designed is great for both left and right handed.

tell your friend to shoot right handed. Its not hard to figure out. I had to do it. It was weird at first then it just came natural. Tell him to put his big boy pants on.

Lefty uppers are great for suppressor use. Other than that, not really necessary.

I would suggest this only if he is right eyed.  Go off your dominate eye, not your hand.

Op, I shoot mostly irons/non-magnified optics) left handed as of late.  (I am left eyed, right handed)
I have had zero problem shooting right handed ARs with a deflector left handed.  I did it yesterday for a few hundred rounds with no noticable gas blow back.  Like posted above, I would only worry about it if it was going to be suppressed.

I'm left handed. I've shot hi-power for many years in the service rifle class using both m1a's and ar 15's. now I use ar's exclusively.
match course is 88 rounds, both slow and rapid fire. I've never had any issues at all with the right handed gun. only time I ever had a problem was last year in standing slow fire when a hot case bounced off my scope and went down the neck of my shooting jacket. I moved the scope a bit.

that said, I bought a dpms lefty upper that was a deal years ago- I use it on a varmint gun. if I had it to do again I wouldn't have bothered. if I ever need to repace the bolt I may have trouble finding a lefty bolt.

As a lefty I would stay away from the slick side, unless he really wants to save the weight and doesn't mind gas/brass off the face, as long as there is a case deflector shooting a righty AR left handed isnt bad

Lefty here, too. Have always shot right hand rifles with zero problems.

Left handed uppers severely limit you when it comes to important replacement parts like bolt carrier groups. It also limits your rifle choice. Since Stag is basically the only true lefty upper out there of acceptable quality, you have to use their proprietary parts. You can't count on them being easy to find if/when you need them - also think years down the road as well. I prefer the ability to use easier to find, more commercially available and better quality stuff.

+1

I am left eyed and handed but two of my kids are right handed and left eyed.  I taught both to shoot left handed and they are quite excellent shots.  By and large I believe shooting according to your eye dominance is always a good policy.  Having said that, I shoot enough off my right shoulder to keep me able to take any common deer shot from the "off shoulder".  Just makes sense to do so.  Who knows, some day I might get a screamin deal on a Brit L85...

Has anyone here shot a slick-sided AR off the left shoulder?  Just curious.
