On a pre-ban Colt sporter rifle (blue label box), is it legal under federal law to alter its original configuration by replacing the fixed stock with a telescoping stock and/or by replacing the barrel with one that includes a bayonet lug?
The question here is whether it was configured as an assault weapon before the ban. If it had 2 or more of the "naughty features" before the ban, you are clear to go. IF it only had a pistol grip, but no bayo lug,fh,or folding stock, you may be screwed. By definition, it had to have the features before the 94 ban. But if it did have the features of an assault rifle before the ban, you can add features or change them as you wish. ;)
Thanks for the advice, everybody! The rifle was manufactured with a pistol grip, detatchable magazine and flash suppressor. Since it was originally configured with 3 of the "evil" features, it sounds like it will be legal to add 2 more "evil" features. The rifle has had only one owner, so its configuration every time it changed hands won't be applicable.
