I was reading through some specs for an ACOG and noticed that the lenses have a "lense coating" that supposedly protects the glass from minor surface abrasions, wear, etc. I saw some other scopes that claim the same. I've also heard that this same coating can wear off.

First off, is this correct? And secondly, if it can be worn off, is there some sort of polish or reapplication that can be done to reapply it to the scope?

Yup, you are correct is stating that over time, this coating (sometimes branded and "diamond" something-or-other) will "fall" or wear off-however you want to describe that it won't be there anymore. I've always considered it something like a zinc-oxide coating on a steel boat. You put the zinc-oxide over the steel, so that IT oxidizes instead of the steel, thus protecting the boat from corrosion.

Now, this is the current state of art for this process. In the future, if it is still being used, it will get better and last longer.

Optics coatings can't be "reapplied" by hand.  If it's worn off, it's off.  Optics coating are applied to glass under laboratory conditions.  There was a really good article about how this is done in an American Rifleman magazine last year (wish I could remember when).
