Added a Levang compensator to my 7.5" RRA upper to hopefully reduce the blast and make it more enjoyable to shoot. No flats to put a wrench on so I used a strap wrench which didn't seem to be crushing the crush washer at all. I didn't like the look of that so I put a couple of drops of blue Lock-Tight on the threads.
Took it out today to test and the blast was greatly reduced. Almost made it through a 30rd magazine when a BOOM and flash came from the muzzle. Checked the brake and it hadn't moved so I continued to shoot. Ran fine until the last two rounds, BOOM....BOOM with a good flash and a lot of noise. Is this the nature of the beast or do I not have this thing tightened enough? I've read here that a strap wrench should be used to install, but it didn't seem to get tight enough. Any idea how to really crank this thing down? |

Not a definitive study, but this video shows a wide range of muzzleflash.

Wolf ammo with the poly coating, still working on a some $99- cases from a few years ago It's not the flash that bothers me but the sound. It's like shooting with the A2 flash hider when it goes "BOOM!". Not an ammo issue, I've put many rounds down range from this same lot. |
| the last round= bolt hold open which could have contributed to the loudness. I doubt it was caused by unburnt powder because I'm not sure where the compression would come from as powder in the open simply burns without an explosion. I would say it's the ammo. I have had this happen before because (I assume) a few rounds were loaded hot. |
| Right. You can't rule out the ammo b/c you've shot it in a completely different setup. With that baby-d*** barrel, you're going to NOTICE hot rounds. The crappy wolf isn't exactly heralded for consistency. I would guess you're getting hot rounds in there. Next time you have a louder one, clear your chambe, drop the mag, slap on the safety and fondle your comp. Is it loose? If no, then it's not the comp! |

Wolf is all I've ever run through this upper and I've never noticed and hot rounds from this batch. The recoil is the same for each shot and it's pretty accurate in this upper and my MSAR. I'll run some South African surplus next time out, maybe they'll all make a large flash boom. |
