I have been in the Army National Guard and Army Reserves for 12 years.  I have also been a police officer for 7 years.  I have owned and shot AR-15's for the better part of 14 years.  The main manufacturer's I have dealt with are primarily Bushmaster, Colt, and Rock River Arms.

I just recently purchased an M&P AR-15.  I have heard about the Lewis Machine and Tool AR-15's.  Can anyone tell me the quality and reputation of these rifles?  I am looking for some insight into them as I am considering purchasing a second rifle in the very near future.  Thanks in advance for your input.

I'm getting ready to purchase an LMT upper in the 14.5" config. You absolutely cannot go wrong with LMT.
I think(based on the info from this site)that LMT is a top-tier manufacterer. I think they spend a little more time in the little things, unlike Bushmaster,DPMS,and others. Plus, you can get the upper in almost any config you want(with 1/7 twist rates)!

Thanks for the input!  I am looking at picking up a Defender lower with collapsible buttstock and a 2-stage trigger.  The upper I am looking at is the 16-inch model with the Enhanced bolt carrier group.  I am also looking to put a set of KAC SOPMOD RIS handguards on it but am having a bit of trouble finding a set of them.

I just picked up 20 P-Mags and an A.R.M.S. backup iron sight for it.  All I have left to do now is talk the wife into letting me pick up an ACOG and I will be happy.

Sounds like a nice setup you have working there...

LMT uses the best material and has some of the best looking gear out there.

I've got both 16" LMT and Colt 6721 carbines, LMT is probably the closest to Colt with the most desirable Mil-spec features.

There are only a few items which are not that important to me anyway, that are different with LMT, it doesn't have tapered pins at the FSB, the barrel are not finished under the FSB, the handguards are not the double layer heatshields, and it don't have a H buffer.

The upper to lower fit of my LMT is average, tighter than my Colts and slightly looser than my RRA, I like it's fit compared to my other ARs.

My opinion on the LMT enhanced BCG is "I'll pass", a lot of members used them but with mixed results, I decided to just go with the proven LMT M16 BCG and I have no problems with it for three years now (approx. 1,500 rounds). You could save the extra money for your ACOG.

I've got the KAC M4 RAS on my LMT and would recommend it over the RIS model, the RAS model have a locking bracket that locks to the barrel nut to prevent the rails from moving even when worn out. You have to check the Equipment Exchange often, they sometimes shows up there at very good low prices.

The only reliability upgrades that I did was I used BCM (Bravo Company) bolt extractor upgrade kit and LMT H buffer.

I'm very satisfied with my LMT and I won't hesitate getting another one for my next project.

Since I already have a S&W M&P-15 I was just wondering if anyone on here could tell me how the LMT compares to it.  I am currently deployed and haven't had a chance to shoot the M&P yet.  I actually bought the M&P for my wife but curiousity is getting the best of me on how they compare.  Thanks again for all the info.

Smith doesn't have these:

4150 barrel steel
1/7 twist
MPI'd barrel (not batch tested)
HPT barrel (not batch tested)
M4 feed ramps

But I wouldn't go out and sell your Smith because it doesn't have these things though.  The new Smith's are a fantastic deal.

Ok guys, obviously the more a person reads the more questions come up.  I bought the LMT.  I purchased the 16" upper with enhanced bolt carrier group.  I purchased a Defender lower with collapsible stock and two stage trigger.  I bought a KAC RAS rail system.  I don't have any of the LMT stuff yet as there is naturally a backlog until they are shipped.  I am, however, looking very forward to getting it all together.

I also have a S&W M&P 15 that I bought about a month before I ordered the LMT.  I haven't shot it yet but should be taking it out this weekend to run it through some drills.  I am definitely looking forward to getting out with that one as well.  You guys have covered the differences between these two rifles pretty well.

Now, I have not had very good luck with Bushmaster rifles in the past.  My agency purchased Bushmaster rifles for our patrol cars and I am an Armorer for them.  The pistol grips tend to fall off unless you loctite them in, I have had broken bolts, and loose carrier keys.  These are just a few of the things I have seen with them and they are fired very little each year, probably less than a few hundred rounds each if averaged out.

I have run into some who say that Bushmasters are good rifles if you replace the bolt.  While I feel this may be a very fine rifle for an average owner who doesn't shoot very much.  I do feel, however, that the serious operator who is running a lot of rounds downrange will likely have problems with them.

I am just looking to see what some of you guys think about this.  Do you think the Bushmaster is a good rifle for the serious shooter?  If not, what do you have to support your opinions?  Right now my opinion is running that Colt and LMT are running up near or at the top for quality productions guns.  It sounds like the Defensive Edge SLR series rifles are running top notch quality as well.  Just looking to kick this around a bit.  Thanks guys.

I recently checked out a Smithy M&P, it was very cool but the price tag was more than I could digest. Looking back at it now I'm glad I didn't buy it, I like my LMT better, even though I RSBR it, the cost doesn't come close to the M&P price. I still have $300 I can play with.  I like the additional features because the other 2 AR's I have don't have those features at all.

Chad,

Not sure which M&P you were looking at but I just bought a straight M&P 15.  Regular handguard, M4 configuration with collapsible stock and standard handguards.  Removable carry handle and it was VERY competitively priced to such brands as Bushmaster.  $950 with a $100 mail in rebate so I couldn't argue the price on it.

My LMT is in the works.  I have ordered everything and am putting it together as I want.  Ordered a Defender lower with collapsible stock and two-stage trigger.  16" upper with enhanced bolt carrier and bolt.  I did not order a handguard from LMT as I ordered and received a KAC RAS rail system.  I ordered Magpul XT rail panels for the handguard.  I also ordered a Magpul MIAD pistol grip and a core for it to hold an extra bolt and firing pin.  Have a Vltor stock on the way, standard style, with all the cheekpieces as well.

I have an A.R.M.S. backup iron sight waiting for the upper to come too.  I have a new Gear Sector two-point sling.  I just bought 20 thirty round Magpul P-Mags.  Damn I've spent some jingle but it should all be worth it when it is all here and put together.  I will post pics when I have it all and give a range report.

I have shot the M&P though and I have no complaints about it.  Fired about 300 rounds out of it the other day.  It is accurate and very reliable.  I had zero issues with it and I was impressed.  It appears to be of better quality than a Bushmaster based on my past experiences with Bushmasters.  Take care and good shooting.

BCM uppers

It's a bit cheaper than an LMT upper, and it's really nice.

I ordered my LMT 16" upper monday from G&R Tactical.Should have it in a couple days and will post my findings.
I decided against the Enhanced BCG and went with the standard assembly.Mainly I based my decision on the overall price of the enhanced BCG and the feedback from more experienced folks than myself. Most everyone Ive asked said to save your money.
From what Ive read you cant find a better upper unless you go with a BCM..

Aye, Paul at BCM has really worked to make his uppers the best hard use upper available. Some of the ways it is better are a bit esoteric, but I am glad he works to push the market towards the best possible weapon for the $$.

Yeah from what Ive read BCM and LMT are the top of the list as far as quality, performance and customer service.Ive been reading about LMT for a long time and have wanted one badly,so I went that direction.
I have not bought a new AR since 2000, so Im due for an upgrade.
Yall are a bad influence too. After reading this thread I was thinking about what I was going to do with the extra upper Im going to have laying around when the LMT gets here.
So I decided to go ahead and order the LMT Defender lower from G&R to put the LMT upper on.That way I will have a complete LMT,rather than mix up my Armalite.Should have just ordered the assembled LMT rifle in the first place...nah its more fun this way.
More is better I guess,at least Im not wasting an upper.

I'm not going recommend one company over another but I will say that I've seen LMT have problems, just as I have with other companies.  My experience is limited to about 4 years, and about 10,000 rounds.

I'm also an LEO and my previous bushmaster never failed me.  In the first class I ever took I saw to Colts have feeding issues.  One of which failed to extract the round before cycling causing the bolt to lock up and a huge pain.  The guy was slamming his rifle on the ground while pulling the chargin handle for quite a while before the round was freed.

Our agency just purchased several LMT's for our SWAT guys and one of them has a feeding issue just about every other round.  The rest of the guns are fine though.  I'm sure they'll send it back and LMT will fix it.

My current gun has a Cerro upper w/m4 cuts, a cmmg 11.5" lightweight barrel, mi 10" free float handguards, a smith vortex flash suppressor, bushmaster bcg/ch (from my old gun), bushmaster lower, h2 buffer, and magpul stock.  The gun runs like a champ.  I pieced it together myself and feel like I did myself a great service by building the gun to my personal preference.  I also saved a ton of money.

Don't get me wrong guys.  I wasn't trying to bash one brand over another here.  I am an armorer for my LE agency and will openly state that no matter what brand you purchase there will be problems.  Some guns come brand new without a flaw and others need a little work to be right.

A perfect example of this is the SOCOM 16 I just purchased.  It has a problem and will most likely need a new receiver but Springfield is taking care of me.  My agency purchase primarily Bushmaster rifles and I have had a lot of repairs with them from pistol grips falling off the rifles from being in the cars to carrier keys coming loose.

I can't say they are any worse than another rifle based on my armorer experience on the PD due to the fact that the majority of them are Bushmaster but all our Colt's in the Army National Guard on my last two deployments never had a pistol grip come loose or anything of that nature.  That is not to say they don't have their own problems at times too.

I just prefer not to own a Bushmaster is all.  LMT has an outstanding reputation and that is why I chose one of them.  There is a reason some manufacturers cannot gain a military contract while others can and much of this has to do with the quality of the components used in the manufacture of the weapon.  Higher quality components simply put mean that the CHANCE of having problems is somewhat reduced.

I know a lot of guys who swear by Bushmasters just like any other brand.  I think a lot of it really boils down to how much you shoot it and what your specific application is.  Good shooting to all and I am glad to see people are very proud of their rifles!

Ive neber owned a Bushy so I cant comment on that.I will say Ive been a hardcore Armalite man for many many years.Yeah I had a few problems with my Armalites such as carrier keys coming loose and other issues mostly due to the older .223 Rem chambers that were rather tight IMHO.Otherwise Ive had few problems with my Armalites.
My choice to go with a LMT this time was due in fact to the reputation, detail and the quality components used in the uppers.Im not knocking Armalite at all, like I said Ive had exceptional service from them and has been my favorite rifle line for many years. But I wanted a documented rifle as close to what a true Mil-spec as I could get and the LMT fit the bill in barrel configuration,BCG,FSB and all the related testing such as MPI and HPT associated with all the parts. The fact that LMT does some extensive R&D,test firing and proofing means alot to me.Not all manufacturers can or will provide proofs to the claims.
Yeah any weapon can have issues....its man made so there is going to be a failure from time to time.Having the features, proper assembly and right parts from the start eliminates alot of the problems some folks see regularly.
So thats why I chose LMT.If I had not gone that route it would have been a BCM without question.

I received all the parts to my new LMT rifle.  16" upper receiver assembly with enhanced bolt carrier and enhanced bolt.  Defender lower receiver with two-stage trigger.  Put on my Knight Armament RAS rail and my Magpul rail covers.  Replaced the LMT pistol grip with a Magpul MIAD pistol grip.  Installed my A.R.M.S. #40L-P backup iron sight and my Vltor carbine stock.  Looks very nice and I am impressed with the trigger on the lower.

Went out to the range a few days ago and got to put some rounds downrange.  I only had about a half hour before dark to shoot but it shot very well.  Got the rifle BZO at 25 yards but that was about all I had time for.  Still got to send a few rounds downrange with no problems.  I will get some pics downloaded and posted for all to see.

I actually worked there as a college student doing odds and ends in the shop (drill press front sights or blasting uppers or lower batches....OLD location in the little blue building.  The second summer there, I helped them move locations to this nice new industrial complex building..... you find the nastiest things in the bottom of a CNC!!!  ABSOLUTE sticklers on quality control, but I cant tell you how many times I found bluing on the underneath of my lathe handles..... sigh..... GREAT bunch of guys to work with lol!  Worked another summer home at this other place down the street (Houge tool and plastic) doing temp plastic injection molding....  funny, but it turns out they were M203 hand grips going to LMT.  They offered me a rifle for $900 out of my paychecks back in '93 or '94.... I was like, what would I need a rifle for LOL!
