How did guys in the field load their mags with tracer rounds? Was it one tracer round for every 4 regular rounds?? or 3 or......?
The tracers are : 5.56 M196 55 Grain Red Tipped Tracer Lake City USGI |
| Marines in the battalion I was in didnt really use them in their magazines. I had 28 rounds of tracer in a magazine if I ran out of options to mark a target for aircraft but never used it. Didn't like them because it would show my position if I used them. I had an ACOG and knew what I was hitting and didn't need tracers to tell me. Unless you want to look cool they don't really have a civilian use. |

Back in the 80's we used them when we would go to our training stints and did night fire.
I think we would put one every three or four. It was always fun to watch the ricochets. No such thing as ACOG or any optic to us back then. Other than a giant starlight set of glasses. lol |

Loading 1 tracer every 4 ball rounds really only has value when adjusting fire with an automatic weapon. Loading the last few rounds in the mag with tracers to tell you that you are almost empty won't always help you in an urban environment where ranges are often shorter than the ignition delay of the tracer rounds... i.e: you will never see them lit. Also, if you are firing rapidly in a high-stress environment, you are likely to lock open on an empty mag by the time you realize you just fired your tracer rounds...
IMHO, keeping a magazine of tracers in your kit has some potential value if you need to mark a target or for their incendiary value. Just remember that tracers work both ways and they WILL set your range on fire given the chance. 1DD |
