I'm getting all the parts together for a 300 Blackout build to go along side my AR's in ,223 and .556. I started thinking about what would happen if a person accidently loaded a wrong caliber round into one of these two.
Most specifically these two rounds because of the inter-changeable parts, ie; bolts and mags, lower and upper receivers, etc.

I can see the problem of trying to chamber a 300BLK round into a .556 chamber/barrel. The bolt would strip it from the mag but would fail to fully seat the larger diameter round.

But what if it's the other way around? The .556 in a BLK barrel? Once again the bolt would strip the round but this time it would ( I assume) fully seat the round? If this is true, I assume once more that it
would fully fire the bullet. Accuracy would obviously suffer but at close range one could still put a round on a target.

Gas loss around the bullet would hamper the bolt from cycling correctly but the brass would still have a tight seal.

Just a thought and I'll let the more experienced members chime in.

You've answered/ figured out your own question.Blackout in a 5.56 simply won't fit, and will not fire so no harm done. The other way around it WILL go bang albeit with poor accuracy,Case neck may split but I'm pretty sure action will not cycle due to excess gas loss.

I guess I have been paying more attention to the experts on this great site than I thought.

If that is the case. How much power does it have in it if a .223 is fired from a 300blk barrel?  And what if a suppressor is on the end of it at the time. Will that increase chances of a baffle strike?

Very little velocity from a 223 from 300 blk. As there is no build up of pressure behind the bullet to increase the velocity. Chance of a baffle strike would be extremely high as there is no stabilization whatsoever of the bullet.

Once I build my 300 Blk I will only use pmags for it and use usgi for my 223.

I hate to tell on myself, but a few weeks ago at the range I accidently picked up a mag full of 223 and loaded it into my 300 blackout carbine.

That's it, that's all that happened.  I waited about 30 seconds in case it was a misfire, ejected the case and inspected the primer, no mark at all, it was when I was pondering the unmarked primer that I finally realized what I had done.  When you normally chamber a round you will get a small pinpoint strike mark from the firing pin, since there was no mark at all, I'm guessing that the bolt didn't go far enough forward to lock, so no mark on the primer from chambering, and when the hammer fell it couldn't reach the firing pin.
Lesson learned, don't have magazines with the other caliber within reach, since they use the same magazines its easy to pick up the wrong one.
