If one was to store mags, USGI's, steel, and PMAGs, for a long period of time, say decades, is putting them in a humidity controlled safe/vault fully assembled the best way?  I've heard of people stripping the guts, wrapping them in paper or plastic with oil, etc.  Is it necessary?  Can you just leave them as is, should you add a light oil coat to the springs or is this notion bad for the springs function?  Just wondering since no one knows what is ahead with the possible 2nd Amendment assault at hand.  Thanks for your time and input.  Its always appreciated.

My stash mags are all new USGI.  Coated anodized aluminum body.  Stainless Steel Spring.  Plastic follower. Nothing to rust.   I reckon they'll outlast me sitting in an attic.

I got some FAL replacement springs and they were gooped up with grease or cosmoline, as were some of the mags I got from DSA. I left it on the springs and wrapped them in plastic coated kraft paper.

I have some Colt straight 20s that spent 30 years in a foot locker in my garage until I started using them in '04. They all work fine.

I wouldn't agonize. Throw them in the back of your bottom drawer with your socks. They'll outlast you.

Just one more word. If I run into any of you bums on a street corner, just let's pretend we never met before.

Is that you, Septon?

just throw them in a 20 mm can, They fit perfect and it will hold around 65 mags (cant remember exact number)

That is probably fine.... just putting them in the safe.

I would put some grease on springs if they won't be climate controlled. Stainless steel rusts, despite what some people say. It doesn't rust easily, or as badly... but it will develop rust. If the bodies are steel, I would grease the bodies too.

Followers are plastic, they won't rust. GI bodies won't rust. PMag plastic won't rust. Steel bodies and springs are the only things I would bother greasing... and that is only if you are not going to store them in a controlled climate.

Last year i bought a mag for my SMLE that was British (not Indian) surplus, dated 1963.  Had been in original packaging since manufacture, packaging had adhered completely to metal, grease had hardened.  Cleaned it up with solvent, and works fine.  Even carbon steel seems to hold up after a long time.  I wouldn't worry too much about the synthetics and aluminum ones.......
