| Going away for three months (if you must know I am leaving for Marine Corps Recruit Training) I want to use just a mag well lock but I have no clue if that will destroy my bolt catch or buffer spring for being pulled and locked back for that long any ideas tips or pointers for that long of a storage? |

Just take the bolt and bolt carrier out of the gun, and then lock it up. Nothing will rust unless you leave it in a damp location. Put the bolt and bolt carrier some place safe in your room.
The spring wouldn't be damaged from being compresed a long time, but taking out the carrier will keep people from wanting to fool around with it and try to close the bolt on the gun lock. |

1. apply oil 2. put in safe 3. go to boot camp As is typical around here, first post nails it. Three months is not a long time if the weapon is not exposed to high humidity. Weapons do not need to be fingerbanged every day to feel loved. Routine PMCS should be sufficient whether you are doing convoy security tomorrow or leaving your weapon in a safe for five years. Clean (doesn't need to be white glove clean) the weapon and use a rag to apply a very light coat of Breakfree CLP to every surface and use a patch to do the same to the bore. You should get a Stack-On type gun locker at the bare minimum and bolt it to the floor and the wall. A safe would be better. |

I'd forget the mag well lock and go with a trigger lock if you really feel you have to... Or as someone said, remove the bolt carrier (or just the firing pin) and it will be incapable of actually firing. I'm in the same boat as you as far as not having a safe... If I was going to be gone for a long period of time I'd take out the Bolt carrier group and put it in my ammo box, light coat of oil on the gun and put it in my Bore Store gun bag. They're designed to push moisture out and there are guys here that have used Bore Stores for 5+ years and didn't get any rust. Best of luck to you and thanks for your service. |

I dont own a safe I own a drag bag and a gun lock thats why I asked the question about the bolt catch being worn heavily. Is that a possibility from having it locked back for that long? No it is not, but you need to listen to what people are saying and get yourself a secure way to store that weapon. |

Yeah ill probably just end up taking the BCG out and lock it in my little safe with some oil on it. Thanks again for your help guys. I'll see you soon Rich either at boot camp or SOI. 3rd Battalion Mike company. That sounds like the best plan (locking up the BCG separately, if you don't have a safe). But it's not too likely that you would see Rich at boot camp. I went through MCRD at the same time as two guys from high school, and I saw each of them once while I was working in the chow hall. But since recruits don't work the chow hall anymore, it's not too likely to run into someone you know, unless you happened to be put in the same platoon and/or company. At SOI you will have a little more freedom. |

I'm not relaly expecting to I guess it would just be nice. I'm leaving with two of my friends that are out of the same recruiting station and same recruiter as me also. I honestly dont expect to see them it would just be nice.

Yeah a drag bag really isnt a secure way of storing any weapons system but I'm on limited funds. One of my first investments after bootcamp will deffinitally be a gun safe. |
| If it was me and I was limited on funds I would at least get a hard case so I could put on a lock and hide it out of sight. Then I would oil it up real good and place it in a gun sock. I had all my rifles in gun socks last year when I was deployed and had no issues. I take it your parents are watching it for you? |

Yeah my father is an ex police officer and my brother a current so I may give them a key and have them check on it every so often.
Your plan sounds good also. Im thinking about just oiling it putting in a gun sock, in my soft case then throwing a lock on it and sliding it under my bed. |
