Am trolling for opinions regarding long range varmint scopes. Presently own a 4.5-14 Nikon Buckmaster that has served extremely well on my 20" Flat top, but have recently up graded to a 24" target type rifle that is MUCH more accurate. Has anyone an opinion on a good scope to top this rig for doing prarie dogs,  coyotes and the occasional paper target? I saw the Leupold Var III 8.5-25 power on their website and it looks like a possibility. This is definitely NOT a CQB rifle, so Aimpoints and EO's are not in consideration.

My opinion is that there is a practical limit to usable scope power in the field.  I am from Louisiana and do most of my shooting here.  On several of my varmint rifles (bolt actions) I have the Leupold Vari-X III 6.5 to 20.  They have worked fine.  On two hunts I have gone out West to shoot PDs.  There I found that once I got much above 12X the mirage got so heavy that the higher power was of no use.  The last three scopes that I bought were fixed 12X or less.  I have a new Bushmaster Varminter that I have not put a scope on.  When I do it will be a M8 Leupold 12X.  The Vari-X III is a great scope and I do not think that you are hurting yourself by getting it-but I might consider one with less power.  If the 4.5-14 has served you well look at the same scope in the Vari-XIII line.

Hmm from the PD hunters I talked too they usually end up with thier scopes around 20 to 22 x. Then again that is in North Dakota and they are skunkin em with wome 30 06 from 800+ meters. So 20x would be about right.
