Hello everyone, I've been lurking on this site for a long time. I'm very familiar with the AR-15 platform and have owned several though the years. I've never had an AR308 before though, never even fired one. Yesterday I just jumped in with both feet, I bought an Aero Precision M5E1 upper/lower set. I thought I would chime in and get some input on my component choices. For my first 308, I don't want a carbine and I don't want a benchrest rifle either. I want something with a balance of longer range capability and lighter weight. Here's what I've decided on thus far.

AP M5E1 Receiver Set w/15” Handguard
AP M5 Standard LPK
ALG ACT Trigger
Magpul MOE+ Grip
DPMS Rifle Buffer Tube
Magpul MOE Rifle Stock w/PRS Extended Butt-Pad
JP SCS-10 Buffer
AP NiB BCG
AP AR 308 Charging Handle
BHW 18” Mid-Length Standard Profile
Ares Effin-A Compensator .308 MKII
SLR Stainless Sentry 7 Adjustable Gas Block
AP Stainless Mid-Length Gas Tube

I priced it out and can build this spec for about $1625(Not including the 308 Reaction Rod I now need to buy.) So, opinions? Anything you would change, or other products I should take a look at? I'm not big on flash, just functionality.

I'm not familiar with some of your choices so I can't comment on those, but I think you will want a better trigger.
While the ALG-ACT is improved over the stock triggers, I think you give up quite a bit by not using a better trigger.
I really don't want to steer you toward one trigger or another because I haven't tried many, but, I was very happy with a POF 4lb single stage drop in unit over the ALG-ACT option.

Looks like you have a very nice build planned.

So you've used the ALG?

I would also recommend looking at a Geissele trigger for your intended purposes.  Welcome aboard BTW.

Ive heard mixed reviews on using a reaction rod..........I used a set up that I purchased on ebay that's holds the upper horizontally in a vice, I removed two barrels and installed two float tubes with it........worked fine and a lot cheaper than a reaction rod.

Not familiar with the adjustable gas block you are talking about............I would purchase an SLR gas block........anything with a set screw and a locking set screw is not worth it as they foul up with powder residue........

Looks good. The ALG will be a fine choice above factory.

Wow, thanks for the replies guys. I realize the trigger is not a place to skimp, especially if I want off-hand accuracy. I'm keeping the ACT on my list for now, mainly because I've never tried one and I can always drop it in another rifle. The Geissele G2S is the backup in the event the ACT isn't good enough, I think it probably will be though, I'm used to Mil-Spec. As for the gas block, thank you!! Those gas blocks look fantastic. Granted it's nearly 150% more expensive than the BTE, what a great design though.

Yes i used one in my LR308.

I think the ALG is the best battle trigger around for the money. If you just want a blaster, it will be great. If you want a precision rig try a SSA-E or a JP yellow spring with the ALG.

Sweet!!! Just got my shipping notice from Aero, need to start procuring the rest of my parts. I'm going to turn this into another build thread and update as I make progress.

EDIT: Uh oh, Joebob has 10% off Geissele in June. I might just get that G2S.

Just curious, but what does anyone need a reaction rod for? I've built 4 Ar's total including two 308's and used regular ol' vise blocks I found on ebay for $15 shipped.

Other than that, the ALG trigger is cool, but not if you're eventually putting  optics on your rig or planning to shoot for groups or target shoot. I also have one, but I also have a Geiselle SD3G and a Rock River varmint 2 stage. At least step up to the Rock River for a few extra bucks if you're short on funds, otherwise go grab something better. Just my $.02...

Looks good. That's about where I came in with my 308. DSG discount allowed to add a few parts but I think you'll be very happy. FWIW I went with the geissele but have used the ALG and they make a good product.

Welcome to the site.

Why do I want a reaction rod? Why does anybody buy anything?

My receiver set showed up today! Sorry about the crappy cellphone pics.

Finish looks good, quality is typical forged with random visible machine marks. FCG pocket looks flawless. The handguard had a little more wiggle than I expected, I tightened the screws down and holy crap, this thing is rock solid. I had read about the handguard screw/barrel nut interference issue a couple of days ago. I verified this, and it's 100% accurate to say the handguard screws will gall the barrel nut when both are fully seated. Good news is that it's not all 8 handguard screws with the issue, just the 4 at the end of the receiver. Looks like I need to take about .025 off the screws and it won't be an issue anymore. Bummer, but definitely not a deal breaker. I'm very excited to start my first 308 build. Gotta get more parts on order!

Edit: Pictures didn't embed? Am I too much of a newb?

Editx2: Ok? Now the pictures are embedded.
