I did a search and didn't find anything so pardon my noob question. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a low profile barrel? I am looking at getting one for an all around utility ar. Am I better off with a standard barrel? Thanks in advance.

Light profile barrels just reduce a little weight...

lighter weight, a easier to handle weapon, you can lose accuracy and the barrel is going to heat up very quickly, for a utility AR a lightweight barrel is a great choice since i assume your going to be carrying it alot .

It is actually for a friend of mine and it will be his first AR. He just wants a good all around rifle. How much difference in heat up and accuracy loss can one expect during normal range time (No mag dumps).

very little to none for heat ups, it can cause issues in guns that get the amount use the the military gives their guns. accuracy wise, i wouldnt suggest a light weight barrel for a long range ar but the difference wont be very noticeable, the larue predatAR is very accurate and has a very light barrel. Id say go with the light weight.
