Any suggestions or referrals for a good solid block at a good price?

Others here may disagree, but I do not use a lower receiver block...

Get a nice piece of heavy leather to cover your vice jaws, and you can clamp on the magwell.  Don't over tighten.

If I really have to get nasty with a lower (locktighted or strongly staked castle nut for example)  I have a piece of wood that I sanded and cut to fit into the magwell to give it extra support...

I have been using the DPMS panther claw for about 5 years............My buddy is an Air Force Armorer and they use the clamshell set up from brownells...........Its the unit that clamps around the upper and another piece slides in to prevent crushing................when the unit is in the vice...........

when I lived in an apartment and didn't have anyplace to mount a vise I used the floor and my weight. Worked fairly well except for one barrel that I couldn't torque right. The first thing I bought when I moved into a house was install a vise in the garage.

I bought the vise block kit from Bravo Co, it is marked Model-1 Sales. Works fine and I have built 5 more rifles with no problems.

I purchased this one:   http://usarmorment.com/ar15m16-lower-receiver-vice-block-p-1087.html
I am sure you can find them cheaper if you look around.

Maybe I'm missing something...  the OP asked about a LOWER receiver block.  I don't use one, and think them unneccessary.

An UPPER receiver block is, of course, mandatory for replacing barrels, handguards, etc.  I use a Brownells clamshell type.
